Week 6: Guest Suite reveal

The teams reached the halfway mark of the competition, with the guest suite reveals, which include a spacious guest bedroom and adjoining ensuite bathroom.

Winner: Courtney and Sev, House 4

“This is a luxurious wing of the house, which adds so much value,” said Judge Marty Fox.

Courtney and Sev’s winning guest suite involved a clever reworking of the bedroom to make it self-contained and versatile.

Best friends Courtney and Sev created the standout space of the week, praised by the judges for their  clever reworking of the space.

The girls came up with the week’s biggest strategic move, reversing the room entry and wardrobe position so they could include an integrated kitchenette with a bar fridge and sink.

This allows the room to be mostly self-contained – for guests, elderly parents, or adult children. There are even plans to include a kitchen just outside. It was a smart decision, that will augur well for the sale of the house.

Their guest suite featured a king-sized bed with custom bedhead inset with vinyl wallpaper, micro-cement walls and an ensuite that extends the style of their winning main bathroom while trying to stay within budget.

“That bedhead is phenomenal,” said Shaynna Blaze.

The ensuite also came in for praise. “How pretty,” said Shaynna on entry, adding that she loved the curves on the vanity.

“We’ve got beautiful tile selection, amazing mood lighting, appropriate storage, incredible stone, beautiful tapware, not a poky shower – I am so happy,” said Marty.

Design tip

If you are interested in making a room self-contained, consider adding space for a bar fridge and sink, to create a small kitchenette.

House 1: Adam and Jolene

“I love the energy in this room,” said Judge Shaynna Blaze. “This is modern simplicity with lots of punches of colour.”

The SA couple brought colour into their guest suite with a combination of blush and burgundy tones.

Adam and Jolene decided to scale things back after a costly previous week, but they still took a bold approach to their design by including warmer blush tones and some brave colour decisions.

In the ensuite, they added burgundy kitkat tiles laid horizontally, paired with blush pink marble tiles laid vertically, and a pink basin atop a timber vanity, all of which won approval from the judges.

“All of the colour in here is at an appropriate level and an appropriate colour,” said Darren Palmer, who felt the design complemented the adjoining bedroom.

The bedroom included a feature wall of pink wallpaper, artwork and burgundy bedding as well as a built-in wardrobe. “They are really good with their tones,” said Marty Fox upon entry. Darren Palmer agreed, saying he loved seeing the colour, and felt that Adam and Jolene were telling a story with their styling, offering memories and a curated look.

“I think that’s the right approach,” he said.

Design tip

Good quality tapware doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Opt for affordable choices, when possible, especially in guest quarters.

House 2: Chantel and Wyatt

“We’ve got a really nice blend here of traditional and contemporary,” said Judge Darren Palmer.

Chantel and Wyatt continued with their commitment to a minimalistic aesthetic, delivering soft neutrals with a broad market appeal.

The super-organised couple from the Gold Coast finished their spaces well ahead of the other teams, showcasing their strong project management skills and hard work.

Design wise, Chantel and Wyatt continued with their commitment to a minimalistic aesthetic, layering neutral tones and textures for a luxurious feel, while adding strong storage solutions, especially with the built-in wardrobe.

For the bedroom, Chantel echoed the design choices of their successful main bedroom, choosing the same lighting (a circular pendant), wall colour and wardrobe. They added a Venetian plastered wall as a feature in a soft wheat-colour behind the bedhead, which included a waved form and dark trim. The effect was bookended by two wall lights for practicality.

Shaynna Blaze loved the textural layers of the bedroom, saying it echoed the style of their main bedroom design, which she loved, and added interest to the neutral palette.

In the ensuite, a light timber vanity was topped with a classic Carrara marble benchtop for a tone-on-tone effect, along with floor-to-ceiling tiles, with Marty Fox calling it a successful appeal to the local real estate market. “And it might just pay off,” he said.

Design tip

Sconce wall lights are ideal as bedside lamps, providing uplights for ambience and downlights for tasks, such as reading.

House 3: Lisa and Rosco 

“That has to be the best vanity we have seen today,” said Judge Marty Fox.

Lisa and Rosco created a guest suite of quiet luxury and simple elegance, winning strong praise for their ensuite in particular.

After failing to finish their two previous bathrooms, Lisa and Rosco felt the pressure to complete both rooms this week, working super hard and using their experiences from previous weeks to make sure it happened.

“We are taking a simple, doable approach this week,” said Lisa. “We are being smart with our allocation of funds.”

In the bedroom space, the pared-back design included a curved bedhead, matched with layered bedding in chocolate shades, atop a neutral carpeted floor. The cleverly designed wardrobe included a study nook for added practicality. The soft s-fold curtains particularly won praise from judge Marty Fox, for their elegant simplicity.

The ensuite design drew high praise for its tiles, solid timber vanity, sconces and storage, with Marty and Darren suggesting it could have been a 10 if judged on its own. The handmade sinks added a rustic, yet luxurious touch.

“All of it is heaven,” said Darren. “I love the finger tiles against those tiles, these sconces, the face-level storage. They haven’t missed a beat.”

Design tip

When choosing timber accessories or furniture in a bathroom, you will need to ensure that it is sealed properly, either with a polyurethane or natural oil-based finish, to protect the wood.

House 5: Rick and Tayla

“I love that green marble – I think that is absolutely stunning,” said Judge Darren Palmer.

Tayla went solo for her guest suite reveal, while Rick recovered from injury, adding in her signature green tones and travertine.

With Rick recovering from a knee injury, Block All-Star Spence stepped in to help Tayla steer the build for House 5, along with additional help from Tayla’s sister Shannen on the last day or so.

After a talk from Scott Cam about budget overruns, Tayla’s aim was to keep the design simple in both the bedroom and ensuite.

The bedroom included a controversial meadow-style wallpaper feature wall behind the bed, balanced with an oversized floor mirror and indoor plants for a touch of greenery. The light timber wardrobe included a tea and coffee nook amidst the storage.

The ensuite in particular won lots of praise from the judges. It had strong design elements including a spectacular green marble benchtop (which Darren Palmer called “stunning”) on top of the vanity and good tile choices, that echoed the style of the other bathrooms in House 5.

“The main tile choice (travertine-style large format tiles) is really good,” said Marty Fox.

The top-mounted double sink added a strong architectural element, paired with a huge mirror, surrounded by LED lighting.

When facing budgetary constraints, less is more. You can always add extra design elements as the cashflow returns.
