How to redesign your bedroom

Our original master bedroom hadn't been renovated in years and felt stuck in the 70s. Working to a limited budget, we're going to create a look that ties together a subtle colour palette of soft blush that will be complemented by the warmth of copper and timber. 

When it comes to achieving this look at your place, think about some of the pieces in your master bedroom that you love and use them as a starting point for both colour and style.  

Think about layout and light, and how existing or new pieces will work in the updated space and choose a colour palette that works for you.

Once you have a plan, make sure your budget covers paint, floor coverings, lighting, blinds and storage. 

When you have a rough idea of your colour scheme, head to the paint department at your local Bunnings. You'll find handy colour swatches and look books that showcase what's currently on trend. These can make it a lot easier to find the perfect colour combination to suit your space and taste.

Rugs are a great way to add a personal touch to your space, they also provide lovely luxury if they're the first thing your feet touch when you get out of bed. When choosing your bedroom flooring, rug size and style, keep in mind the proportions of the room and think about the texture and colour. It's a good idea to match the secondary colour in the rug with the main colour in the room. If you're running the rug under your bed, be nice and generous with the size. Lighting is also key feature of the room design, with stylish pendants that create a focal point and softer lighting to set the mood.

Choosing the right lighting is an important design decision for your bedroom redesign. Pendants are a great way to add character and create a designer touch. Dimmable downlights are more practical and give you the added benefit of softening the light for relaxation. Table lamps are useful and they also complement your overall design.

To give the room a bright and airy feel, we removed two narrow windows and replaced them with a larger one. We also installed translucent and block out blinds into a bulkhead for a seamless look with a dual function. 

When it comes to bedroom storage, a walk-in wardrobe is always a bonus but there are plenty of other ways to maximise your available space for storage. Depending on your budget, you can either give an existing wardrobe a makeover with new storage components or choose from a range of free-standing wardrobes to suit your space.
