How to build a street library that glows

There aren’t many D.I.Y. jobs that Jade Compston (@jade_compston, loveherdiyhome.com) won’t try. “I’ve pretty much done every renovation project that you can legally D.I.Y.,” she says. “So I don’t touch plumbing and electrical.”
Jade Compston says she grew up surrounded by D.I.Y., with regular renovations on the go and a tradie dad who passed on his skills. She’s now determined to share this knowledge, especially with women. “I like to create content that encourages women to have a go, and see that you don’t have to have any qualifications to be able to create a space that you truly enjoy being in.”
Sharing her projects online started between house renovations, when she turned her attention to furniture flipping. “I did a pair of bedside tables in a stencil design, in colours that were a bit unusual, and they went viral. At that moment, I thought, ‘This could actually be something’,” she says.
Now living in a brand-new home, her focus is on adding character to a ‘builder-grade shell’, a process that takes her down every aisle of her local Bunnings store, from the paint desk to power tools – and even small storage, with her pantry space getting a bland-to-bling glow-up using easy-to-hang wallpaper, trim and baskets. “It gives a much more premium look but was super-easy to achieve,” she says. “Now the pantry doesn’t just feel like a storage area, but more like a custom part of the home.” Another recent project involved creating a statement wall of built-in shelving in her home office, with custom arch details and timber trims.
While never one to shy away from the big jobs, Jade also likes simple bedroom makeovers because, with these, you can transform a space on a small budget. And her favourite technique for personalising a room? “I use picture-frame moulding from Bunnings,” she says. “You can frame out a television or add moulding to a bedroom wall. It creates character, without a huge cost outlay.”

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
