Four different tiles together

Overview

When it comes to selecting bathroom tiles, there are so many options to choose from, it can feel overwhelming. Start by considering the style you want, what materials are right for the room, and the colours and patterns you’re looking for.

To help narrow down your choices and pick the perfect tiles for your bathroom, we’re sharing more helpful tips.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Choose up to three tiles

The first thing to do while shopping for tiles is to limit your selection. Choose three that you like the look of – a feature tile, a floor tile and a neutral tile. This will help keep things simple and avoid overcomplicating your choices.

A selection of three tiles will help you balance the space nicely, without overwhelming the bathroom with too many colours and patterns.

2Start with a feature tile

Choose a feature tile that suits the style you’re going for. A feature tile is important because it is the focus of your bathroom tiles. For the feature tile, you can choose from bold and bright colours, textures and patterns.

Tip: If you’re looking for inspiration, magazines or Pinterest are great places to start.

3Choose a complementary floor tile

Next, choose a floor tile that complements your feature tile; this will tie the look together.

Tip: Make sure you choose tiles that are suitable for floors. It is safe to use floor tiles on floors and walls, but wall tiles cannot be used on the floor.

4Select a neutral tile

The last tile that you select should be a neutral one. It needs to work well with the other two tiles you’ve chosen to create a cohesive look and avoid clashing.

5Keep it tonal

Make sure to keep your bathroom tonal. If you choose too many contrasting colours, it will clash and overwhelm the design of the room.

You can keep it tonal by picking fixtures and fittings in similar tones to the tiles you’ve chosen. You can also select similarly coloured accessories to keep the room balanced and within the theme.

6Choose glossy or matte

Another thing you’ll need to decide is whether you go with glossy or matte tiles for your project.

This choice comes down to personal preference, but it’s important to keep in mind that glossy tiles will reflect and bounce light around the room, while matte tiles will soak up the light and have a different tactile feeling underfoot.

Tip: Why not try both? A mixture of gloss and matte in your bathroom adds variation and depth.

7Try sample tiles in your space

It’s important to keep in mind that things do not look the same as they do online or in-store. You will get the best idea of what the tiles will look like in your space and lighting if you take some tile samples home to try out.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
