How to remove silicone
Old or mouldy silicone sealant around sinks, showers and baths can make your bathroom look tired and may stop the seal from working properly. Removing old silicone is an important step before applying fresh sealant, helping create a cleaner finish and better adhesion.
Prepare the area
Before you begin, make sure the area is clean and dry. Remove any items around the sink, shower, bath or benchtop so you have clear access to the silicone sealant and enough room to work comfortably. It’s also a good idea to open nearby windows or doors to improve ventilation, particularly if you’ll be using methylated spirits or silicone remover during the job. Put on disposable gloves and safety glasses before starting. If the existing silicone is heavily mouldy, cleaning the surrounding area first can help prevent dirt and residue spreading while you work. Proper preparation is key when learning how to remove silicone safely and effectively.
Cut into the silicone sealant
Using a sharp utility knife, carefully cut along both edges of the silicone bead where it meets the surrounding surface. Work slowly and keep the blade steady to help avoid scratching nearby tiles, glass, benchtops or fittings. Applying light, even pressure will help the blade slice through the silicone more cleanly. Continue running the knife along the full length of the silicone to separate it from both sides of the joint. In many cases, this will loosen the seal enough to remove silicone more easily in larger sections.
Remove the old silicone
Once both sides of the silicone have been cut, use a plastic scraper or silicone to gently lift and pull away the old sealant. Work along the joint in small sections, removing as much material as possible as you go. Older silicone may come away in strips, while brittle or deteriorated silicone can break apart into smaller pieces.
Avoid using metal scrapers on delicate surfaces, as they can scratch or damage the finish. If the silicone becomes difficult to remove, continue working slowly and steadily rather than forcing it out, which can damage surrounding surfaces.
Remove stubborn residue
After the main sections of silicone have been removed, there may still be a thin layer of residue left behind on the surface. Apply a silicone remover according to the manufacturer’s instructions and allow it time to soften any remaining silicone before scraping again with a plastic scraper or removal tool. Depending on the age and condition of the silicone, you may need to repeat this process more than once to fully clean the joint. Taking the time to remove all residue will help ensure the new silicone adheres properly and creates a cleaner finish.
Clean the surface
After smoothing the silicone, inspect the joint for any small gaps, uneven sections or excess sealant. If needed, apply a little more silicone and smooth the area again before the surface begins to skin over. If you used painter’s tape, carefully remove it while the silicone is still wet to help leave a crisp edge. Wipe excess silicone from surrounding surfaces using a clean cloth or paper towel before the silicone cures, taking care not to disturb the finished bead.
Allow to dry
Allow the area to dry completely before applying fresh silicone sealant. New silicone won’t bond properly to moisture, dust or residue, so it’s important the joint is fully clean and dry before moving on to the next step. Inspect the joint one final time and remove any remaining traces of old silicone if needed. Once the surface is properly prepared, you’re ready to apply fresh silicone sealant.
