Lounge room with white walls and large window at the end of the room with sheer curtains

Overview

Sheers, or sheer curtains, are lightweight fabrics that cover your windows. They are an affordable way to create soft ambiance, style and elegance in any room. They also add a touch of privacy and diffuse your home’s natural lighting.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Determine the length of your curtains

Use a tape measure and pencil to determine the height and distance between the rod brackets. Mark the spot on each end.

3Find the studs

Use a stud finder to find a solid mount for your rod brackets. If you've got a stud where your pencil markings are, go ahead and drill straight in.

If you haven’t got a stud where you’ve marked, you can use a plaster anchor and drill directly into the plaster, ensuring it is fixed flush to the wall.

4Drill rod brackets

Make sure your curtain rod is completely straight by placing a level on top of the bracket to ensure it's lined up. Drill in the curtain rod brackets.

When affixing the bracket, start by drilling in the top screw, leaving it sticking out slightly so you can continue to cross-check it’s levelled. Next, secure the bracket in place with the bottom screw and tighten.

Once the brackets are in, attach the extender using a screwdriver.

5Cut the rod to size

Depending on the length, you may need to cut the hanging rod to suit your space. If this is the case, use pipe cutters or a hacksaw to cut the rod to size.

6Attach the end caps and curtain rings

End caps protect your walls and stop your curtains from sliding off the hanging rod.

Once your rod is ready, secure one of the end caps so that when you slide the curtain rings on, they won’t slide off. Once this is done, attach the second end cap.

7Hang the sheer curtain

Hang up the rod, take your chosen sheers and hook them onto the curtain rings. Spread the curtains out evenly along the rod.

These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
