Week 10: Sonny and Alicia

The room: Backyard and pool

Cash spent: $18,551 (Budget: $50,000)

Score: 36.75/40 (fourth place)

“Wow, how good does this look,” said Marty Fox. “It’s so simple, yet looking out, it’s a textbook back garden.”

The back of a house with a pool with sunlounges next to it with fencing around it, in it.

Sonny and Alicia took advantage of the huge block by creating a family-friendly backyard with lots of space for kids.

Gold coast parents Sonny and Alicia planned a family-friendly backyard with lots of open space and plenty of grass for kids to run around on, capitalising on the large block size.

“A good, proper, Aussie backyard,” Darren Palmer called it.

The couple chose Queensland landscaper Dylan Barker of Jade Built, along with landscape designer Paul Pritchard to help them with the concept for the space.

Sonny and Alicia used the pool as the focal point of their design, with a timber arbour located in front, covering a huge outdoor eating area designed for relaxed entertaining. Wisteria was planted at the foot of the arbour, which means the area will be awash with colour and fragrance every spring.

A backyard with paved steps amongst the grass, a pool, outdoor table with searing and a timber structure above it.

Ever practical, the couple included raised garden beds for vegies, and a bocce court for family fun.

A freestanding sauna was located next to the pool house, which was constructed to a high standard, featuring a day bed, powder room and kitchenette, set out almost like a hotel suite and ready for unexpected guests.

A backyard, with an outdoor chair, firepit with stumps of wood in front of it and trees in it.

Design tip

A firepit can create a great social gathering spot and conversation area for a backyard. Just ensure you check your local council’s fire regulations before you install one.

What colour paint did they use?

Sonny and Alicia used Colorbond ‘Woodland Grey’.
