Watching your baby grow and hit major milestones is a beautiful thing, but it also means needing to be prepared for when they’re up and moving about. Ensure they have a safe environment to grow and play with a baby gate.
Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.
There are a few types of baby gates to choose from, each designed to fit different areas of your home and cater to various needs.
These gates are held in place by pressure against walls or door frames, making them easy to install and remove without the need for hardware. They're ideal for temporary use or for blocking off areas like doorways and hallways.
Also known as wall-mounted baby gates, these are securely attached to the wall or door frame using screws and brackets. They offer added stability and are suitable for blocking off stairways and other high-traffic areas.
These gates feature a retractable mesh barrier that can be easily pulled across openings and retracted when not in use. They're great for wide spaces and can be mounted both indoors and outdoors.
Playpens are great for creating a free-standing safe area to play. Wall-mounting hardware is included to adapt to a barrier or room divider; when used this way, they’re great for around the base of staircases or more awkward to close off areas.
When choosing a baby gate for your home and child, there are a lot of factors to consider.
Measure the width of the opening where you plan to install the gate to ensure a proper fit. Many gates are adjustable and can accommodate a range of widths, but it's essential to check the specifications before making a purchase.
Look for a child-proof gate that is tall enough to prevent your toddler from climbing over it but still easy for adults to operate.
Choose a safety gate that has features such as a sturdy locking mechanism, no trip hazard, one-handed operation, and a secure mounting system.
Consider how easy the gate is to install and whether it requires drilling holes or using additional hardware. All Perma Child Safety gates come with detailed instructions and some even include installation templates to make the process easier.
Once you’ve considered all those factors and have an idea of the size and style of gate you’ll need, check out Perma Child Safety’s full range of baby gates.
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
