As with any garden, the amount of direct and indirect sunlight it receives will impact which plants are best for your balcony. North-west facing balconies will be very hot and will require hardy plants, whereas south-facing balconies will require shade-loving plants.
North-facing balconies that enjoy plenty of sunshine are suitable for a wide range of plants, including flowering annuals, herbs and even vegetables. East-facing balconies will suit shade tolerant plants like camellias and hydrangeas. If you've got a west-facing balcony, look for tough, heat and sun tolerant succulents or dwarf bougainvillea.
Make sure your balcony will be able to support the weight of your garden, especially if you're planning to include heavy pots. There are now lightweight pots made of plastic composite materials that are absolutely perfect for small spaces and apartment balcony living.
