Open indoor area with a round table and a chair
Now is the perfect time to tackle those maintenance jobs that need to get done, but always seem to get pushed to the side for another time. We’re sharing a checklist to guide you through essential indoor home maintenance projects.

A little TLC now will help safeguard your home for the future. We’ve compiled a handy checklist of the most common indoor repairs and home rejuvenation fix-its that will make a noticeable difference to the look, feel, and well-being of your house.

Take a month, map out a game plan, and within 30 days, you’ll have made amazing progress, clearing all those "saved for a rainy day” projects off your list.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Essential repairs

Roll up your sleeves and start by addressing the small home repairs that are never prioritised. These projects might seem insignificant, but they can save you a lot of time, trouble and money down the track. Also, completing even one of these projects will provide enormous satisfaction, as you’ll see an immediate difference.

1. Wall-to-wall improvements

Fixing holes in your walls or repairing cracks in plaster are both easy D.I.Y. tasks that instantly rejuvenate the look of your home.

Start by fixing any holes in your walls. Gather the tools and safety equipment you need, clean the area, apply a patch, plaster over the patch, and you’ll be ready to paint!

Repairing cracks in plaster is just as easy. After preparing the surface, simply cover the crack with plaster compound, sand it smooth and give it a fresh coat of paint.

Once your walls are looking fresh and new, hang those paintings and pictures you’ve been meaning to display. This personal touch is the perfect way to brighten your home with memories and showcase your style.

2. Get down and dirty

Blocked drains, persistent mould, grotty grout and chipped or broken floor tiles – they're mood-killers and can actually have an impact on your mental and physical health. You can get through these D.I.Y. projects swiftly and easily, and you’ll be amazed at the outcome.

Mould is dangerous to your health so start by getting rid of bathroom mould. Mould is a type of fungi that thrives in moist, unventilated places. To keep your bathroom looking fresh and feeling healthy, apply anti-mould cleaner to affected areas and wipe it clean.

Tip: There are a variety of anti-mould sprays to choose from, including some that are designed for delicate painted surfaces.

Once you’ve removed any mould from your bathroom or home, it’s important to address the root causes to prevent it from happening again. There are variety of ways to keep mould under control, from checking your gutters to getting some moisture absorbers.

Next, unblock any blocked sink drains. This is never a fun job, but it will make your life so much easier. Simply pump a plunger over any affected drain holes and flush the sink with drain cleaner, followed by clean water.

If you have any chipped or broken tiles, replacing them is an easy fix. Using a chisel, remove the broken tile, clean the area, install your new tile, and apply grout. It’s an instant face-lift for your home. After checking for and replacing any tiles, give your tile grout a refresh.

3. Steam clean your carpets

Regularly steam cleaning your carpets is a great way to prevent the spread of allergens and bacteria, remove stains and give them a rigorous cleaning. There’s no need to hire a professional carpet cleaner, either. Hire one of our special carpet cleaning machines in-store – they're inexpensive and it’s a great way to get that professional clean at home by doing it yourself – and then follow this handy guide on how to steam clean your carpets.

Enjoyable rejuvenations

Once the essential repairs have been completed, it’s time for the feel-good detail work, from organising to painting. These touches will transform and enliven your space.

1. Organise your pantry

Cluttered homes make for cluttered minds, and an easy fix is to organise your pantry. All you need is some clever and stylish space-saving storage solutions, labels and a little time to sort through everything. The end result will be a fresh-looking space you’ll enjoy using. An organised pantry will also save you time while cooking, as well as money – it's easier to keep track of ingredients so you don’t over-purchase.

2. Restore your timber table

If you have a timber table in your home, it’s an easy D.I.Y. project to transform it from something tired and worn to a stylish centrepiece. All it takes is a little sanding and a couple of coats of furniture oil.

3. The power of paint

Never underestimate the power of paint to refresh and renew. If you’re thinking about painting a surface, the first step is to prepare it.

In the kitchen, paint your benchtop to give the room an updated, modern look. Also, think about painting your laminate kitchen cabinets. This cost-effective, D.I.Y. project is a great way to liven up your space. It also helps extend the life of your cabinets, making them more durable and resistant to chips.

If you want to make an impact, paint a feature wall. Feature walls can transform a room, creating a look and feel that’s uniquely yours. Although it might seem like a big step, this D.I.Y. project is inexpensive and impermanent – if you don’t like it, you can always paint over it, choosing a different colour.
