Week 7 Kitchen reveal

As the heart of the home, kitchen week is always a big event on The Block, with all teams putting in hours of hard work and all their newly acquired design skills to impress the judges.

Winner: Adam and Jolene, House 1

“It’s probably one of the best kitchens I have ever seen,” said Judge Marty Fox. 

The SA couple scored the winning kitchen with a clever reworking of the design to capture their spectacular views.

Adam and Jolene are the only team to reorient their island bench toward the view, which impressed the judges. “This is spectacular,” said Darren Palmer on entering the space. “It’s so beautifully cohesive and it feels so natural.”

“I am blown away by how considered and elegant everything looks.”

The couple’s neutral kitchen and butler’s pantry featured light oak cabinetry and a textured stone benchtop, paired with brushed gold tapware and adjustable pendant lights. A section of glass-fronted cupboards added what Darren called a “punctuation point” in the minimalistic joinery.

Jolene called the huge island bench a “beautiful piece of art” and Shaynna Blaze applauded their choice.

“I love the size of this, and it just blends beautifully with everything else in this room,” Shaynna said.

The powder room continued the rammed earth look the couple featured in the rest of the house, along with a smart toilet, burgundy basin and underfloor heating, a design that Darren called “beautifully finished”. 

And Jolene didn’t forget the lift when it came to luxurious touches. She enveloped the inside of the lift (and even the lift shaft) with a game-changing wallpaper, featuring gumtrees. The judges appreciated all the extra details.

Design tip

Brushed gold tapware brings all the luxury of gold, without the over-the-top bling element.

House 2: Chantel and Wyatt

“This big bank of nine drawers is really functional,” said Judge Darren Palmer. “The size, the layout, it looks fantastic.”

Chantel and Wyatt continued their theme of white and bright, with just a touch of gold – and lots of marble.

The super-organised Gold Coast couple had a few logistical hiccups this week, but still finished on time and continued their traditional style in their kitchen design, remaining committed to their vision despite not yet winning a room.

Chantel and Wyatt closed off the back of the butler’s pantry and installed marble-effect stone throughout, including on the kitchen island and splashbacks as well as the butler’s pantry. Gold handles throughout added a luxurious touch.

Darren Palmer complimented the couple on the symmetry of the central zone. “That all works,” he said. “You’ve got all the cold storage functioning in one place. You’ve got the wine, bar etc, and this is all fridge”, indicating the huge French-door integrated fridge across from the island bench.

The design of the butler’s pantry won lots of praise, particularly the curves on the end of the bench, which allowed the two rooms connect seamlessly. Open shelving provided practicality, while floor to ceiling cupboards offered the opportunity to keep the space tidy.

The couple even introduced some colour this week, with their powder room, including a blush shade for the basin, alongside a beige and white stone vanity.

Design tip

Integrated appliances can make a room feel more luxurious as they help to continue all the joinery around a space, keeping a kitchen streamlined and elegant.

House 3: Lisa and Rosco 

“I am loving the arches,” said Judge Shaynna Blaze of the bar and coffee nooks.

WA couple Lisa and Rosco won praise for their dark and luxurious kitchen cabinetry, supersized island bench and colourful powder room.

Lisa and Rosco closed off the butler’s pantry hallway entry (makes it more functional, said Lisa) and committed to a dark, entertaining-focused kitchen with walnut cabinetry, a coffee and bar nook (with under-bench wine cabinets), as well as an almost five-metre kitchen island. This was designed as a showstopping feature that could accommodate five people to eat in.

“It’s an entertainer’s home and that’s the heart,” explained Lisa.

Shaynna loved the stone benchtop, calling it a “chef’s kiss” and the kitchen of the day. Marty Fox agreed, calling it a “really incredible space”.

The judges were wowed by the sheer scale of the island bench and loved the dark walnut timber cabinetry, with the copper handles and matching copper sink built into the island.

The well-appointed butler’s pantry delivered everything a homeowner needs, using the same dark cabinets for consistency. “How good is this?” said Shaynna as she walked in, complimenting the couple on the open shelves and double sink.

Lisa created a wow factor in their powder room with a striking feature wall of green marble tiles, along with a statement deep sink and smart toilet.

Design tip

Powder rooms provide the opportunity for creative freedom, as they are usually discrete rooms away from the rest of the house. The perfect place to go crazy with colour!

House 4: Courtney and Sev

“I love these curves, which really celebrate the cooking facilities,” said Judge Shaynna Blaze.

Courtney and Sev’s kitchen highlighted their upgraded appliances with streamlined joinery and curvaceous forms.

Best friends Courtney and Sev’s kitchen was the talking point this week, thanks to the $250,000 appliance upgrade the girls won earlier in the season, and the design was planned around highlighting the upmarket fixtures.

The Brisbane girls closed off the pantry hallway entry, narrowing the pantry and designing curved forms throughout the kitchen, topped off with a custom pendant light designed by Sev, which all three judges loved. Light oak cabinets matched the adjoining living space.

“It’s a very impressive kitchen,” said Darren Palmer. “There is no way you would walk in here and not be impressed by the amenities it includes.”

The pantry was praised for its huge storage capacity and elegant styling, with Marty Fox calling it beautiful and amazing.

Darren Palmer loved simple elegance of the powder room. “This is simplicity plus,” he said. “This looks really finessed and beautiful and visually appealing.”

Shaynna agreed, calling it the house of quiet curves.

Design tip

Curves in joinery help to make a space feel more generous – and are great if you have young children and want to avoid sharp edges.

House 5: Rick and Tayla

“I love the tile, I love the drama, I love everything about all of the design choices in here,” said Judge Darren Palmer about the powder room.

Rick and Tayla took their design to new heights with a calm and curated kitchen space with extra storage and subtle lighting

Father and daughter team Rick and Tayla stepped up the styling and design in their kitchen, choosing a light-up quartz splashback as the key feature of the space, a showstopper that impressed all judges.

“That is so special,” said Shaynna Blaze about the splashback. Darren Palmer agreed, calling it “exceptional”.

Rick and Tayla kept the original layout, which included a central island bench, multiple wine fridges and exposed shelving. Pale timber cupboards and light herringbone floorboards kept the space light and bright, and were matched with elegant slimline handles. They chose to add curves to the marble-look island, which softened the space while still providing plenty of room for informal eating.

While unfinished, the butler’s pantry wowed with open shelving backlit by more LED lights and a thoughtful, practical layout.

“This is the best butler’s I have seen all day,” said Marty Fox. “Look at the shelving, look at the LED, the stone and another wine cabinet.”

In the powder room Tayla chose large format green marble-style tiles for impact – “sexy, moody” she called it, which impressed the judges, who loved her brave colour choice.

Design tip

To create a backlit quartz splashback, install thin LED panels underneath a specially selected translucent stone surface to create a glowing visual effect.
