How to make a wireless pendant light

Think about where your new pendant light will have the biggest impact. They're perfect above a bedside table, reading nook or dining table, or in any corner of the home where extra lighting would be useful but there's no power point in the ceiling.

Before choosing a location, make sure the pendant won't interfere with opening doors, ceiling fans or frequently used walkways.

If you're hanging the pendant above a dining table, position it so it sits in the centre of the tabletop rather than in the centre of the room. This helps anchor the table visually and creates a balanced, welcoming look. Aim for the bottom of the shade to hang around 75 to 90cm above the tabletop, which provides plenty of light while keeping the fitting low enough to create a cosy, intimate atmosphere.

Choose a lightweight pendant shade that suits the look of your room and is suitable for use with a rechargeable or battery-powered bulb. We used a paper shade for a soft, diffused glow, but lightweight woven or fabric shades can work just as well as hanging light shades. Assemble the shade according to the manufacturer's instructions before attaching anything to it, checking that all supports are secure and the hanging point is ready for the cord.

Choose a decorative rope or cord that complements your pendant shade and the style of your room. White cotton rope creates a clean, coastal look, while natural jute, braided cotton or twisted sash cord can add texture and warmth.

Cut the rope to your desired length, remembering to account for the finished hanging height. Tie one end securely to the hanging point at the top of the shade, then create a loop at the opposite end so it can be placed over the ceiling hook. If you have any excess rope, fold it neatly against the main length and secure it with matching coloured tape to create a clean, finished look for a D.I.Y. pendant light.

Select a rechargeable or battery-powered light bulb that's designed for portable lighting and can be easily removed for charging. A bulb with a remote control is a great choice, allowing you to switch the light on and off or adjust the brightness without needing to reach the pendant each time.

Look for a warm white bulb if you're creating a cosy atmosphere or choose one with adjustable colour temperature so you can tailor the lighting to suit different spaces and occasions.

Some rechargeable bulbs include a built-in hook, making them easy to suspend inside the shade. If your bulb has a flat base, you can attach a small removable adhesive hook to the top of the bulb and hang it from one of the internal support wires inside the pendant shade. Position the bulb so it hangs centrally for even light distribution and check that it's secure before hanging the pendant. When the battery needs recharging, simply remove the bulb, charge it according to the manufacturer's instructions and place it back into the shade.

Before installation, add together the weight of the pendant shade, rope and rechargeable bulb and confirm it is within the hook manufacturer's load rating.

Choose a removable heavy-duty adhesive hook that's suitable for the combined weight of your pendant shade, rope and rechargeable bulb. Following the manufacturer's instructions, attach the hook to a clean, dry ceiling and allow the adhesive to cure fully before adding any weight.

Use a stable step ladder and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions while working overhead.

Once the hook is ready, place the rope loop over the hook and adjust the pendant until it hangs straight at your desired height. Switch on your rechargeable bulb and enjoy the transformation.
