How to add LED strip lights to your bathroom
By
Looking for an easy way to give your bathroom a fresh new look? LED strip lights are a simple D.I.Y. update that can add soft, ambient lighting and make your space feel more luxurious. Whether you're renting, don't want to make permanent changes or simply love refreshing your home as your style evolves, many adhesive-backed LED strip lights can be removed later with minimal fuss. Install them beneath a floating vanity, behind a mirror or along shelving to create a warm, inviting glow without the need for major bathroom renovations.
Before installing LED strip lights in your bathroom, keep these points in mind:
Choose the right LED strip
LED strip lights come in a range of styles, so it's worth thinking about how you'll use them before you buy. Some plug into a nearby power point, while others are rechargeable or battery-operated, making them ideal where power access is limited.
You'll also find models controlled by a remote, a smartphone app or built-in buttons. If you're installing waterproof LED strips in a bathroom, always choose a product that's suitable for use in wet areas and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
Plan the lighting
Think about where the lighting will have the biggest impact. Installing LED strips beneath a floating vanity creates the illusion that it is floating above the floor, while placing them behind a bathroom mirror produces a soft backlit glow that's ideal for creating a relaxing atmosphere. They're also a great option for open shelving or recessed niches.
Measure the installation area before you begin and check whether your LED strip can be trimmed to length at the manufacturer's marked cut points.
Prepare the surface
For the adhesive backing to stick properly, the surface needs to be clean and dry. Wipe the installation area with rubbing alcohol or a suitable surface cleaner to remove dust, moisture and soap residue, then allow it to dry completely before applying the strip.
If you're renting, also check that the adhesive is suitable for the mounting surface before installation.
Install the LED strip
Peel away a small section of the adhesive backing at a time, pressing the strip firmly into place as you work. Installing it gradually helps keep the strip straight and prevents it from twisting or stretching.
Position the strip so it's hidden from normal view while still allowing the light to shine onto the surrounding surface. This creates a soft, even glow without exposing the individual LED lights.
Choose the lighting
Switch on the lights and experiment with the different brightness and colour settings. Warm white creates a relaxing, spa-like feel, while cool white is ideal for practical tasks such as shaving or applying makeup.
If your LED strip lights offer colour-changing modes, you can easily adjust the mood to suit the occasion using the remote or app.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use LED strip lights in a bathroom?
Yes, but only use an LED strip that the manufacturer identifies as suitable for its intended bathroom location. Check the product instructions before installation and don't assume that every LED strip is suitable simply because it's described as waterproof. If installation requires hardwired electrical work, use an appropriately licensed electrician.
How do I make LED strip lights stick in a bathroom?
Start with a clean, completely dry and suitable mounting surface. Remove dust, moisture and soap residue with rubbing alcohol or another cleaner suitable for the surface, let it dry, then apply the strip according to the manufacturer's instructions. Moisture, residue or an unsuitable surface can prevent the adhesive from bonding properly.
Can I cut bathroom LED strip lights to fit?
Only if the manufacturer says the strip can be trimmed. Measure first and cut only at the marked cut points specified for that product. Cutting elsewhere may damage the strip or stop part of it from working.
Can I put LED strip lights behind a bathroom mirror?
You can use LED strip lights behind a suitable bathroom mirror if the strip is approved for that location and the product can be positioned and powered according to its instructions. Concealing the strip from direct view can create a softer backlit effect rather than exposing individual LEDs.
Are battery-operated LED strip lights suitable for a bathroom?
Battery-operated LED strip lights can avoid the need for a nearby powerpoint, but the product still needs to be suitable for its intended bathroom location. Check the manufacturer's instructions before installing the strip or placing its battery pack.
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes.
