Week 2 Family bathroom reveal

It was family bathroom week on The Block this week, a competition that became even more intense with a $250,000 kitchen appliance upgrade on the line. Bathrooms always require hard work because of all the trades needed, so each team needed smart layout decisions, flawless finishes and solid project management to stand out.

Winner: Courtney and Sev, House 4 

“They have literally pulled everything out of their repertoire and it’s landed perfectly,” said Judge Darren Palmer.

Brisbane best friends Courtney and Sev dazzled with a winning room that featured plenty of storage and thoughtful fittings.

After securing their dream house after winning Week 1’s room decider, best friends Courtney and Sev negotiated with their fellow contestants, juggled trades and spent up big to achieve their design for their family bathroom, starting with changing the floorplan. The girls moved the door to the powder room to a cavity slider opening up to the hallway instead of through the bathroom.

Marty Fox called it a great location for the powder room, especially in terms of access from the rest of the house. The powder room included a curved Venetian plaster wall and a spectacular marble shelf, along with stacked light sconces, creating a sumptuous atmosphere.

In the main bathroom, a large skylight centred over the vanity allowed light to flow into the space while a champagne finish on the tapware added a soft glow. Softly textured large-format tiles were installed from floor to ceiling. The timber vanity was bookended by two large timber cupboards, providing plenty of storage, while the shaving cabinets were inset into the wall to create a streamlined appearance.

A double shower was included in the wet zone, along with niches for even more storage.

Design tip

Cavity slider doors are ideal for compact spaces because you don’t need to allow for the door opening. While a little deeper than a standard door, their space efficiency means they work well in a powder room.

House 1: Adam and Jolene

“The level of finish and the materiality in the palette is quite beautiful,” said Judge Marty Fox.

With an attention to detail and a great choice of quality finishes, Adam and Jolene created a luxurious bathroom that impressed the judges.

The SA couple created a wet zone that used textural layers to create a sense of elegance. Gentle beige tones throughout echoed the quiet luxury aesthetic the couple are aiming for, with large-format floor-to-ceiling tiles paired with soft sand-coloured mosaic tiles behind the vanity and in the shower seat. The bathroom was separated into two distinct rooms – a larger wet area with freestanding bath and double shower facing a double oak vanity, and a separate powder room. Judge Darren Palmer called the shower enclosure “gorgeous”. On-trend bronze tapware added to the luxuriousness.

Adam and Jolene took the brave decision to remove the door on the powder room, which didn’t go down well with the judges, but did open up the entry and make the space seem more generous.

A window with opaque glass added light to the shower area, and was paired with a fixed full-length glass panel on the side, with garden views. The elegant powder room had a niche for a petite vanity and oval mirror with inset LED light.

“It has beautiful stonework, beautiful basin, beautiful vanity. Everything is state-of-the-art,” said Shaynna Blaze approvingly.

Design tip

Opaque glass is a great choice for bathroom windows as it allows natural light through while maintaining privacy.

House 2: Chantel and Wyatt 

“I love the colour of these basins and the detailing on the spout – it’s luxury,” said Judge Shaynna Blaze.

Understated elegance was the theme of Chantel and Wyatt’s family bathroom, with high-end fittings and curvaceous forms.

In a tough week emotionally, Gold Coast couple Chantel and Wyatt delivered an elegant family bathroom, despite missing a whole day of work, catching up largely due to the skill of their tilers, the famed Cursio brothers.

Once back on track, the couple decided to maximise the bathroom space available, deleting the bathroom door, but keeping the powder room door for privacy. A pared-back palette throughout created the feeling of spaciousness.

Curved forms featured strongly, with rounded basins, and curved detailing on the timber vanity, matched with oval-shaped shaving cabinets and generous freestanding bath. Marty Fox was a big fan of the sconce lights set either side of the vanity, calling them “beautiful”.

The couple’s open shower zone included a tiled shelf for toiletries, blending in nicely to the wall behind and white gold tapware added the right touch of bling. The couple were disciplined in their spending, however, winning the budget challenge prize of $10,000 for their efforts.

Design tip

Freestanding baths have become standard in new builds in recent years, but ensure you set them at least 100mm away from the wall to prevent moisture damage and allow the surrounding area to be cleaned.

House 3: Lisa and Rosco

“This is devastating,” said Judge Shaynna Blaze, as she surveyed the unfinished bathroom, while noting the clever floorplan.

A tiling disaster was the undoing for Lisa and Rosco this week, when they failed to finish their sanctuary-style family bathroom.

Now located in House 3, Lisa and Rosco had grand plans for a luxurious day spa-style bathroom, but were let down by a tiling disaster, after the tiler didn’t create the right fall for the main area. It was a disappointing week for these two after they realised they weren’t going to finish and they gave up, choosing to help their neighbours instead.

The couple’s design was simple and understated, with beige tiles paired with a solid oak vanity, to give a bit more texture. The judges loved their choice of materials, which were left on display. “I love the vanity,” said Darren Palmer. “it’s really appropriate that we are bringing in those colours.” He said the room was exceptionally well designed.

The minimalistic palette was designed to create calmness, and a sanctuary-style atmosphere, said Lisa. “By doing less we hope you feel more,” she said.

Marty Fox called the unfinished room the “reality of renovating”. “This happens every day to people and unfortunately it happened on such a big week,” he said, while praising the layout the couple had for the space and their choice of fixtures.

Design tip

A well-designed bathroom should have a slope (called a ‘fall’) to direct water toward a floor waste, and is mandated by building regulations. This prevents pooling, stops mould and mildew growth, and protects building materials from water damage.

House 5: Rick and Tayla

“House 5 have shown us that they have an approach that isn’t the same as everyone else, and they will set themselves apart and be memorable,” said Judge Darren Palmer.

Rick and Tayla’s family bathroom was all about texture, with the couple choosing travertine as their hero material.

It was a tough week for the father and daughter duo, who were unable to complete either their main bathroom or powder room. However, their design choices did score highly with the judges. Tayla chose creamy soft travertine as the showstopper in their bathroom, with floor-to-ceiling large-format travertine tiles in the wet zone and on the floor, offset by smaller square mosaic travertine tiles behind the timber vanity.

The tactile nature of the tiles helped to add interest to their muted colour palette and won approval from the judges, who felt that this room was a step in a better direction after the disappointment of the guest bedroom.

Rick was the workhorse of the week, using his building skills to save money and control the end result. The couple reworked the existing floorplan, changing the entry of the powder room to come off the hallway, which made it more private, said Marty Fox, who approved.

Unfortunately, the powder room was just an unfinished shell, but the layout was well-thought out and again is planned to feature travertine.

Design tip

It’s a great idea to use the same material in different ways to create interest and consistency. Choosing mosaic tiles and large format tiles in the same material can give a space cohesion.
