Week 1: Emma and Ben

The room: Bathroom

Score: 24/30 (equal third place).

Judge Shaynna Blaze loved the reference to the land where the house is located. “I think they have really been inspired by that,” she said. “The balance of colour and texture is so spot on.”

Experienced renovators, teacher Emma and engineer Ben, chose House 1 and started off strongly by creating a tranquil bathroom with touches of soft green that gave off spa vibes to reflect the tree-change Daylesford location.

Emma plans to include shades of green throughout the house as a uniting feature, and the bathroom was just the first step.

“I really want to bring the outside in,” she explained.

The design details of the room were impressive – including a tiled shower seat, elegant brass tapware, a tiled curved nib wall and generous vanity – which set the tone. The judges applauded the choice of the double vanity, which featured rich walnut timber with a curved natural stone top.

“It has got a really big wet area,” said Marty Fox. “You don’t feel claustrophobic in here.”

The green feature tiled wall (finger tiles are popular this year!) was a bold choice, but it helped to unite the room. The choice of soft green sinks was a winner with the judges, as it helped to make the room feel inviting and calm.

“It’s a cracker of a room,” said Darren Palmer. “It’s completely well finished. This couple, Emma and Ben, have lots of experience and clearly they know how to deliver.”

Design tip: Consistency is key when designing a whole house. Emma and Ben chose soft greens as the design highlight of this space and plan to include the same tones throughout.
