Overview

Get ready for summer with our top five tips to create the best pool space. From removing hazards and creating clear sight lines, to cleaning your water and adding sun protection, there’s plenty you can do to make sure your pool area is safe for the entire family to use all summer long.

Steps

1Make your pool area safe

First of all, it’s important to make sure your pool area is safe. Make sure that your fence door is closing properly and that it locks behind you.

Remove all furniture, pot plants or objects that are near your pool fence that a toddler or child could use to climb over into the pool area.

It’s also important that any trip hazards are removed from the pool area.

To supervise pool activities properly, ensure you have a clear line of sight to the pool. If you have a glass fence, use a window vacuum to make sure you can see clearly.

2Add an umbrella for sun protection

An umbrella is a great thing to add around your lounge area for added sun protection. Start by placing the base in an area where people won’t trip, and then place the umbrella in the base.  You can then place a sun lounge and soft furnishings underneath.

3Clean water

Before your family and friends take a dip in your pool, you want to make sure your pool is clean. You’ll need to add chlorine to keep it sanitised. In order to ensure the correct levels, it’s worth testing your water on a regular basis, especially if you use it a lot.

The Bunnings team can test your water on site and recommend personalised solutions to ensure clean and safe pool water all year round.

Outside of this, you should regularly sweep leaves, insects and other debris from the top of your pool water, to make sure it remains clear.

4Maintain the surrounding areas

A majority of the poolside entertainment will be happening around your pool, so it’s important to maintain your surrounding areas. Start by sweeping away any debris and dry matter with a broom.

Then, use a high-pressure washer to remove any debris that may make the poolside slippery when wet.

Inspect your deck for any rough surfaces that may cause splinters in bare feet and check for any nails that may have lifted. No one wants a stubbed toe poolside!

The next step is to give your deck a proper clean with a cleaning solution and an oil to protect your timber. Start by applying the cleaning solution to the entire area and then washing it down with a hose. Once this has dried, apply decking oil using a paint brush.

5Add some additional comfort

Start styling your space! Adding some outdoor cushions will add a pop of colour to your space and provide comfort. A side table will come in handy to hold some refreshing drinks, books or magazines. Bringing in some pot plants and palms will have a cooling effect and a lantern is a creative way to store sunscreens and repellents.

Now all that’s left to do is invite friends and family over for a day out in the sun.
