A ginger cat sits on a cat litter box cabinet D.I.Y.

Overview

Cats have a reputation for being clean and self-possessed, so why not learn how to make a kitty litter box that gives yours a private, stylish place to do their business? Start by cutting an access hole in the side of a cabinet to create a hidden cat litter box. Place the litter tray inside, and enjoy the benefits of concealing their toileting spot – it eliminates the sight and reduces the scent of an active litter tray. You can use any piece of furniture for your cat litter box cabinet D.I.Y. project, as long as it has enough depth and height for your cat to comfortably use. Opt for solid timber rather than chipboard for easier cutting.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Mark your cuttings and measure your cat

On a side panel of the cabinet, mark a 23cm high by 20cm wide rectangle about 15cm from the base to begin creating your cat litter box cabinet D.I.Y. project (see ‘Measuring your cat’ below). Use a 20cm round plate to draw the curve at the top.

2Cut out the side of your cabinet

To start making a kitty litter box, drill a starter hole using a 10mm bit, then use a jigsaw to cut out the arch shape for the access hole in your cat litter box cabinet. Sand the cut edges smooth and wipe away any dust to ensure a clean finish for your hidden cat litter box.

3Install rubber or foam around cut out for safety

To complete your cat litter box cabinet D.I.Y. project, install rubber channel or foam seal around the cutout to create a polished and functional entry for your cat litter box. Trim the seal to fit perfectly using scissors for a neat and secure finish in your kitty litter box setup.

4Pop in the litter tray

Position the litter tray inside your cat litter box cabinet and complete your kitty litter box setup by hanging a scoop and waste bags on the back wall using hooks. This ensures your cat litter box is both functional and organised.

Tip: To make cleaning easier, trim a cat litter mat to fit the base of the cabinet.

5Measuring your cat

The access hole in this cat litter box cabinet D.I.Y. project is larger than standard cat flaps, but here’s how to make an opening that's perfectly sized for your feline:

  • Measure the widest part of the cat – the chest or hips – then add 2cm-5cm;

  • For the height, measure from the top of the shoulders to the bottom of the chest or belly, whichever is the largest part, then add 2cm-5cm; and

  • To check height clearance, measure from the floor to the cat’s belly.

6Keep in mind...

When using power tools, always wear safety gear (safety glassesear muffs and a mask), follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in a well-ventilated area.
