Puppy love

If you’re about to welcome a new four-legged member of the family, congratulations! This is the beginning of a wonderful journey – they call it pet parenthood for a reason. Whether you're welcoming a lively puppy or a laidback senior, a dog needs guidance and the right accessories. We’re sharing top tips from PEDIGREE®.

Food for thought

Most dogs – whether a pup or adult – take about a month to settle into their new environment, so be patient. As with humans, a good meal can go a long way towards making them feel at home. A nutritionally balanced diet to suit your dog’s age and lifestyle is key. PEDIGREE canned and dry foods are formulated with vitamins and minerals at the right levels to support healthy development.

Tip: For puppies aged four months and over, PEDIGREE® DENTASTIX™ Daily Oral Care Treats can reduce tartar build-up and clean hard-to-reach teeth.

Safe and sound

Puppies can be a lot like children: they are busy investigating, having fun and making messy mistakes. Make sure you pup-proof your home. Stash choking hazards, cleaning products and electrical devices out of reach, secure cupboards and make sure your dog is never left alone near open doors or windows.

Don’t forget the yard either. Cover ponds or pools, and patch any holes in fences and gates that your dog could squeeze through or dig under. Check garden beds for toxic plants, too.

Warm welcome

Make a checklist of potential purchases before your pup arrives. Must-haves include a bed, blankets, toys, a crate, and even a kennel to provide a comfortable place that your dog will feel secure in. A collar and lead, bowls, and grooming tools will also help with a routine, including feeding and daily exercise.

All Australian states and territories require a dog to be registered and microchipped. Check with your vet to understand which vaccinations are needed for where you live.

Remember: patience is key for creating a fun and rewarding friendship between you and your dog.
