How to install battery‑powered wireless security cameras

Some security camera installations can be completed safely as a D.I.Y. project, while others legally require a licensed professional.

D.I.Y.‑appropriate tasks include:

• Mounting battery‑powered or plug‑in cameras to walls, eaves or posts
• Connecting cameras to Wi-Fi and setting them up using the manufacturer’s app
• Adjusting camera angles and settings

Contact a licensed tradesperson if the following work is required:

• Hard‑wired cameras connected directly to mains power
• Running new electrical cabling through walls or ceilings
• Connecting cameras to fixed electrical circuits

Remember, if the installation involves permanent electrical wiring, it must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Before installing any cameras:

• Confirm whether your camera system is battery‑powered, plug‑in or hard‑wired
• Check Wi-Fi coverage in all proposed mounting locations
• Identify safe ladder placement points and overhead hazards
• Confirm cameras will not record neighbouring properties or private spaces
• Read the manufacturer’s installation and safety instructions in full

Cameras must be positioned responsibly. Before you install your camera/s, consider the following:

• Only aim cameras at your own entry points, driveway or yard
• Avoid recording neighbouring properties, footpaths or private areas
• Do not install cameras in bathrooms, bedrooms or other private indoor spaces
• Follow local privacy laws and signage requirements where applicable

Tip: Correct placement helps prevent misuse and protects the privacy of others.

Before you install your camera/s, make sure that they’re fully charged. To do this, simply unscrew each camera with a screwdriver and plug them into the charger. Allow them to charge before screwing them back into place.

If you’ve chosen a battery-powered wireless camera system (like the one used in our example), you’ll usually only need to charge the cameras twice a year.

To connect your security system to Wi Fi, start by switching on the homebase. Next, plug the provided ethernet cable into the homebase and plug the other end into your home router. The LED indicator will turn blue, signifying that your system is ready to be set up.

Once your system is connected to Wi Fi, you’ll be able to connect to your wireless cameras using the system’s app. This is where you will operate and view live camera footage. Download the app on your electronic device and follow the setup instructions to connect each camera. Now is a good time to make sure that each camera is working properly before installing them in place.

A general rule of thumb is to install a camera above each entry and exit point, where you can monitor who comes in and out of your home. Also, consider where you’d like to place your cameras for the best field of view. This might depend on what you’d like to use your system for, whether it’s checking on pets, monitoring deliveries or added security.

It’s recommended to keep your cameras out of direct sunlight, two or three metres above the ground. This is so the image won’t be obstructed by sunlight and to ensure the camera can capture a broad view of its surroundings. The higher the camera, the more you’ll be able to see.

Visible security cameras are a proven deterrent to crime. However, you may also wish to consider areas that your cameras can be hidden from plain view, as well.

To check the signal strength, place your wireless camera close to where you wish to mount it. Open the security app on your phone and use the mounting guide function. If the signal is weak, you’ll need to reconsider your mounting location and move the camera to a place that’s closer to the homebase.

Mark the area where you’d like to mount the camera with a pencil and pre-drill the holes. Dismantle the mounting brackets by turning the bracket clockwise from the base.

Attach the base to the area by screwing it in where you pre-drilled the holes. Re-attach the mounting brackets. Now you're ready to attach the camera to the mounting bracket.

Repeat this step for as many cameras as you like around your home.

Tip: Using galvanised screws will help prevent rust and deterioration.

Height and ladder safety

• Install cameras no higher than needed to achieve a clear view
• Maintain three points of contact when using a ladder
• Never overreach or mount cameras while standing on the top rung
• Keep tools secured to prevent dropping hazards

Once all cameras are installed, open the app and view the live feed from each one. Adjust the viewing angle so key areas are clearly visible, then check footage at different times of day to confirm image quality. Clean camera lenses regularly and recharge battery‑powered cameras as recommended by the manufacturer to keep the system working reliably.
