Overview

A smart video wireless doorbell is a great way to keep an eye on your front door - whether you’re at home, at work or away on holidays. With features like HD video, motion and heat detection, two-way talk and night vision, these wireless doorbells offer an easy and effective way to improve security and convenience around your home. Many models, such as the Swann EVO Wireless Video Doorbell with Chime Unit, connect directly to a mobile app so you can receive instant alerts and talk to visitors straight from your phone. This is a quick and straightforward D.I.Y. project - just make sure you’ve got a strong Wi-Fi signal at your front door and follow the setup instructions for your specific model.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Charge and set up the doorbell

Before installing the wireless video doorbell on your wall, start by charging it using the supplied USB-C cable. This may take a few hours depending on the model. If your unit supports local storage, insert a micro-SD card into the slot.

2Set up the doorbell and check Wi-Fi signal

While the doorbell is charging using the supplied USB-C cable, download the compatible app and create an account. Most models have a QR code on the back of the unit - simply scan it with your phone to start the pairing process. Follow the in-app prompts to complete the setup. Before you mount the doorbell, it’s important to check the Wi-Fi signal strength near your front door. Stand in the proposed mounting spot and use your phone to test the connection. If the signal is weak, consider adding a Wi-Fi extender to ensure a stable connection once the unit is installed.

3Customise settings in the app

Take a moment to explore the settings in the app. You can usually adjust motion sensitivity, set notification preferences, and personalise features like voice greetings. It’s a good idea to test the camera feed, speaker and alerts while the unit is still portable. That way, you know it’s all working before you mount it

4Choose the mounting location

Pick a position next to your front door that provides a clear view of visitors. Most smart doorbells have a wide-angle lens, so mounting it at chest height is ideal to capture faces and any parcels left at your door. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or heavy rain spots if possible.

5Mark the drill points

Hold the mounting bracket in the desired position next to your front door. Use a pencil to mark the drill holes, and check that the bracket is level using a spirit level. Double-check that the placement gives the camera a clear view of anyone approaching the door.

6Drill and fix the bracket

If you're mounting into brick or concrete, use a hammer drill with a masonry bit to drill your holes. Insert the supplied wall plugs, then fix the bracket using the provided screws. For timber or weatherboard surfaces, use a drill driver with a steel bit, and secure the bracket directly with timber screws. Make sure the bracket is firmly attached and doesn’t wobble.

7Attach the doorbell

Once the bracket is secured, attach the doorbell unit by sliding or clicking it into place, depending on the model. Make sure it’s firmly seated and that the camera is angled to capture visitors clearly.

8Install the chime unit

The Swann EVO Wireless Video Doorbell comes with a wireless door chime. Insert the batteries and mount it inside your home using the included adhesive pad or screws. Choose a central location where it can be heard throughout the house. With everything installed, test the doorbell by pressing the button and checking that both the phone notifications and indoor chime work correctly. Walk past the camera to test motion alerts and check the live feed quality. You can make further adjustments to the settings in the app if needed.
