Smart home technology helps make homes more secure, allowing the resident to switch lights on and off remotely, see who’s at the door before answering it and lock doors without the worry of keys. Smart technology also makes it easy to operate home devices, from setting tap timers to streaming music. Embrace the convenience of in-home technology with these clever devices.
Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.
Leave home without the worry of carrying your keys. Smart door locks allow you to automatically lock your door whenever you leave the house. Keyless Bluetooth locks also allow you to enter your home with the app and can send notifications to friends and family to let them know you have arrived home safely. Some locks also allow biometric access via fingerprint recognition, or provide electronic keys to friends and family members if you need or want to give them access.
Video doorbells allow you to keep an eye on your home, no matter where you are. You can answer your door from your phone or PC and, when you answer the alert, you can see, hear and speak to your visitors (whether you’re at home or not). Video doorbells also provide you with instant mobile alerts when someone presses your doorbell or triggers the built-in motion sensors.
Light is an overlooked security and safety feature. Illuminate the path or walkway leading to the front door to make it easier to see and follow. Spotlights are also useful for brightening up an area after dark. They can be switched on automatically when motion is detected, or operated remotely via an app to turn on before you get home.
Voice activated speakers can be used to switch electronic devices (like lights and the TV) on and off. They can also help with everyday tasks, such as adding items to your shopping list or checking the weather before you leave home. In an emergency, you can use voice activated speakers to call friends and family hands-free, which can be a helpful safety feature.
Smart hubs enable you to coordinate your smart products so they talk to each other and perform functions or ‘routines', like turning on the kettle at a set time after your heating comes on.

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
