When it comes to pet doors, one size does not fit all. It is important to choose one that is right for your pet. For example – if the door is too narrow, pets might damage their hip and back joints from continual bending and twisting to get through the door. If a door is too high off the ground, it might be difficult for your pet to step over the entrance.
Hakuna Pets’ pet doors are available in a range of shapes, sizes, and materials suitable for all pet types and pet owner needs, making it easy to choose one that is just right for your pet.
Many pet doors are suitable for both cats and dogs. However, some are more durable and suited to larger-sized pets (for example, Hakuna Pets’ Super Tough and Essential pet door ranges), while others are best for either cats (like the 4-Way Cat Flap and the Ultra Clear range) or dogs (like the Patio and Deluxe Aluminium pet doors).
Most cats are considered to be small, while dogs range between small and extra-large, depending on their breed.
To determine what size pet door your pet might need, it’s best to take accurate measurements before you make a purchase. Start by measuring the widest part of your pet (usually their chest) and add a couple of centimetres to get your width. To determine the height of your pet, measure the bottom of their chest or belly to the top of their shoulders and add a couple of centimetres. Use these measurements (width and height) to select the right pet door size for your dog or cat.
If you have a puppy or kitten, make sure you allow for future growth. The best way to do this is researching their breed to try and anticipate the size they will grow to and base your measurements accordingly.
If you have more than one pet, base the pet door size on your larger pet, while catering the frame height for the smaller pet.
The most important thing to consider is the purpose of your pet door. Is it to allow your pet to enter and exit the home freely? Is it to allow them access to different rooms inside the house? Do you need to control their access?
Once you have decided on the purpose, you can choose where you want to install your pet door. Most Hakuna Pets’ pet doors are suitable for door, wall, security screen or glass door installation, although some are surface-specific, so check before purchasing. Some pet doors also offer an adjustable or removable tunnel, which easily allows you to customise the thickness to your surface, while other products have a set width which limits your installation location options.
Tip: Make sure you measure the thickness of the surface where you’ll be installing your pet door.

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
