Pale and understated, the Scandinavian aesthetic has evolved into a classic style that is incredibly calm and easy to live with. The palette is tranquil, taking its cues from nature with muted, muddy colours and organic textures. Pale timbers combine with white finishes to create spaces that evoke the natural forests, snow-topped mountains and rugged landscapes of the Nordic regions.
Light timbers are the key to this style – limewashed wooden benchtops and floorboards, and bleached timber accessories match with matt white cabinets to capture a snowy Nordic vibe. A handle-less cabinet style – plus loads of storage space to minimise clutter – keeps the look streamlined and in keeping with the no-fuss functionality of Scandi interiors. Match with classic chrome accessories, along with stainless steel appliances.
While pale timber and white perfectly capture the calmness of Scandi style, it’s not the only way to achieve the look. Get into the Nordic noir mood with black accents or swathes of charcoal grey. Or bring in warm pastels; consider Kaboodle ‘Paint Your Own’ cabinets in a muddy sage green, or try an almost-pink glass splashback – whatever you choose, just keep the colours minimal and muted.
Stone-look materials are a great match for Scandi style but, if marble’s not your thing, try a terrazzo-style laminate benchtop (Kaboodle Terrazzola).
