How to build a street library that glows

Many D.I.Y. enthusiasts would describe their work with a paintbrush and mitre saw as a creative outlet, but the overlap between art and D.I.Y. is particularly clear in the case of Cody Weightman (@codyweightman, @project.cody). The professional footballer and emerging artist has been taking his followers through the process of renovating his Melbourne warehouse conversion, layering the industrial space with his colour-saturated style, one D.I.Y. at a time.
“My whole house just felt like a massive art project!” he says. “And it has a lot of similarities [with art] – you’re exploring colour, form, balance and everything you’d do on a canvas, but in a space you’re living in.”
Tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.
Art – and more recently, D.I.Y. – has provided Cody with much needed balance, particularly in the wake of an injury, which put his AFL career on a long pause.
“I didn’t feel like I had a lot of purpose away from football, it was my everything. I realised that I needed a bit more balance,” he says.
Being proactive about mental wellness, he started searching for a new passion. “I picked up a canvas in hard rubbish while I was going for a walk one night, brought it home, painted it, and from that day onwards, I haven’t had a single week of not doing art.”
Cody’s home is full of D.I.Y. projects, from relatively small – like a Bunnings egg chair repurposed as a hanging chair – to a complete kitchen overhaul. “My house ended up having higher engagement on social media than my football content!”
Did you know we have a great range of equipment ready for your next project through our Hire Shop?
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
