DIY- Header-How to paint a deck

Overview

If you're a D.I.Y. enthusiast, homeowner, or renovator looking to give your deck a vibrant makeover, you're in the right place! Painting your deck is a fantastic way to breathe new life into your outdoor space, creating a welcoming area for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the sunshine. In this handy guide, we'll guide you through each step of the deck painting process, ensuring a durable and beautiful finish.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, ear muffs, gloves and mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Identify your surface

The first step is to determine whether your deck is painted or stained. In the case of a stained deck, you’ll need to prep your deck first in order for the paint to adhere. Start by sanding the entire deck to remove the stain, until you get to the bare timber. This ensures proper adhesion and prevents peeling. However, if you have a new deck, you can jump right into painting without any additional preparation.

2Remove dust, dirt and debris

Clear your deck of any furniture, plants or objects. Grab your trusty outdoor broom and sweep away any remaining dust, dirt and debris. This step sets the stage for a clean surface to work on and ensures a smooth and professional-looking paint job.

3Prepare the surface

For decks that have been previously painted, it's essential to remove any peeling paint or loose flakes using a paint scraper. Additionally, use a belt sander to smooth out rough spots or splintered timber, creating a perfect canvas for paint application.

4Apply a pressure wash

If your deck has been exposed to the elements for a while, a pressure washer can be a helpful tool to remove built-up dirt. Be sure to allow the deck to dry completely before moving on to the next step. Properly drying the surface ensures optimal paint adhesion and prevents any moisture-related issues, like paint bubbling, down the line.

5Clean the deck

Mix a deck cleaner with water according to the manufacturer's instructions and use a brush to scrub the deck. Removing all dirt, mould and stains helps ensure a smooth application. Once done, rinse the deck thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer, taking care not to damage the timber by using the pressure washer too close.

6Prepare the paint

Choosing the right outdoor paint for your deck is crucial. Opt for a paint specifically designed for outdoor use, as it will provide the necessary durability to withstand various weather conditions. Before applying the paint, give it a good stir with a paint stirrer to achieve a consistent colour throughout.

7Paint the edges

For a clean finish, you’ll want to make sure you paint your deck’s edges, corners and hard-to-reach areas first. To do this, start by applying painter’s tape to any areas you want to protect, such as railings and adjacent walls. Then pour the paint of your choice into a paint tray and use a paintbrush to carefully apply the paint to the edges, corners and any other finicky areas.

We’ve gone with Terrace White double strength in a matte finish.

8Roll the Paint

Next, use a deck paint roller to cover larger surface areas. Apply the paint to the main surface of the deck, working in small sections and overlapping each stroke to create a smooth and uniform finish. Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a second coat. A second coat will enhance the colour and durability of your deck, ensuring longer-lasting beauty.

And that’s all there is to it. With your newly painted deck, get ready to enjoy countless hours of outdoor entertainment and relaxation with family and friends.
