If you're a D.I.Y. enthusiast, homeowner, or renovator looking to give your deck a vibrant makeover, you're in the right place! Painting your deck is a fantastic way to breathe new life into your outdoor space, creating a welcoming area for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the sunshine. In this handy guide, we'll guide you through each step of the deck painting process, ensuring a durable and beautiful finish.
Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, ear muffs, gloves and mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.
For a clean finish, you’ll want to make sure you paint your deck’s edges, corners and hard-to-reach areas first. To do this, start by applying painter’s tape to any areas you want to protect, such as railings and adjacent walls. Then pour the paint of your choice into a paint tray and use a paintbrush to carefully apply the paint to the edges, corners and any other finicky areas.
We’ve gone with Terrace White double strength in a matte finish.
Next, use a deck paint roller to cover larger surface areas. Apply the paint to the main surface of the deck, working in small sections and overlapping each stroke to create a smooth and uniform finish. Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a second coat. A second coat will enhance the colour and durability of your deck, ensuring longer-lasting beauty.
And that’s all there is to it. With your newly painted deck, get ready to enjoy countless hours of outdoor entertainment and relaxation with family and friends.
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
