/As we seek to entertain, relax and play under open skies, we need our outdoor spaces to deliver the comforts of home in materials that can withstand Australia's uncompromising climate.
Able to be used where you'd normally use timber, but need something more durable, James Hardie's fibre cement offers just the right combination of beauty and brawn for an outdoor zone you'll never want to leave.
You spend so long selecting just the right cabinetry for your new indoor kitchen, surely your outdoor kitchen deserves the same consideration – particularly as it's likely to be the centre of every party!
Finding a material with the right mix of stunning looks and steely durability is easy with James Hardie; their grooved cladding products, including Stria and Axon, deliver the charm of tongue-and-groove timber with a robust reliability that timber can't come close to.
James Hardie's fibre cement cladding can take whatever an active outdoor kitchen might throw at it: heat from a barbecue or pizza oven, and water from cooking splashes or sudden downpours. Use it to craft stunning cabinetry, or take it to the floor with HardieDeck fibre cement decking.
Picture this: you're finally kicking back after a tough week, tension melting away as you chill on the deck. The last think you want crashing into this relaxation fantasy is splintered decking timber or peeling fence paint, reminding you of your domestic to-do list! Thankfully, with James Hardie products, that task list can be cut right back.
Durable fibre cement materials need minimal maintenance, compared to timber products. They're tough enough to withstand Australia's harsh conditions without shrinking, swelling or cracking, which allows them to hold onto paint longer than timber and means you'll be wielding a paintbrush far less frequently.
James Hardie's fibre cement is also deemed non-combustible, which not only makes HardieDeck and cladding products like Secura sensible choices for bushfire-prone areas, but also makes them ideal for a complete relaxation zone, able to safely include barbecues and fire pits.
The 2019–20 holiday season has been the Buchanan family's first chance to properly enjoy their newly renovated outdoor space – and Glenn says they couldn't be happier.
“This is the first summer we have been able to really use the space since the pool was finished and we are really happy with the end result,” he says.
“The modern decking can adapt to multiple looks, making it very easy for us to change our style as we adapt to the seasons.”
Glenn also says the outdoor space has positively impacted the rest of his family's home, with the long-term benefit of added value always in the back of his mind.
“It really feels like our house just got a whole lot bigger. Our new outdoor room is such a practical, usable space. I can watch the kids while they play and swim, and also know that the additional living spaces will add a lot more value to our property when we decide to sell.”

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
