Week 3: Sonny and Alicia

The room: Main ensuite

Score: 26.5/30 (fourth place)

“There’s everything here that says drop dead sexy, elegant, and classy,” says Shaynna Blaze.”

Modern bathroom with matte gray freestanding tub, stone-look gray tiles, wall-mounted faucet, green towels on wooden racks, and natural light from a high window.
Large-format tiles and a considered colour palette helped Sonny and Alicia to create a timeless, elegant ensuite.

Gold Coast couple Sonny and Alicia drew from nature with tiles in soft greys complemented by touches of deep olive-green in their master ensuite. The highlight was a custom-made green concrete bath with matching basins.

Modern bathroom with double stone sinks, brass wall-mounted faucets, oval mirror, marble countertop, dark wood vanity, and light stone tile floor.

Controversially, the couple reworked their floorplan to change the location of the entrance of the room, so it is entered through the walk-in robe (yet to be completed), via a cavity door.

What really worked well for Sonny and Alicia was their choice of large-format tiles, especially in the wet area to create a sense of luxury. These oversized tiles were installed on the walls and floor, where they were beautifully cut to create the fall into the middle of the shower space.

“It is so relaxing and calming and beautiful,” said Shaynna. “And look at this bath!”

Modern bathroom with freestanding tub, walk-in shower, grey stone tiles, skylight, copper towel bars, and wooden stool with towels.

A mid-century inspired timber vanity was the finishing touch, elevating the space according to Darren Palmer.

Marty Fox said that he thought many buyers would see it as their favourite bathroom “because of the palette, because of the quality and because of the choices they’ve made. This is a really timeless bathroom that oozes luxury,” he said.

The bonus? This couple knows how to budget – they won the award for best budgeting of the week, their third straight win. Vital skills when renovating!

Design tip

A cavity door offers an elegant, streamlined solution when separating rooms and saves on ‘swing space’, making them ideal for small rooms such as bathrooms.

What colour paint did they use?

The paint that Sonny and Alicia used in their main ensuite was Flower Bud on the walls and Ceiling White on the ceiling by British Paints.
