Week 9 Kids bedroom and redo room reveal

Another huge week on The Block with two rooms being completed (kids bedroom and a redo room), as well as the Buyers’ Jury open house challenge, where Adam and Jolene picked up $50,000 for the highest votes from potential buyers. Tempers were high, as was the workload, but all teams finished well, with two houses securing super high scores.

Child's play

The five teams had a double room reveal this week, with a large prize pool and the opportunity to create a fun bedroom for children, as well as redo one of their earlier rooms from the season that hadn’t scored well with the judges.

Scores

Winners of week nine (for the fifth time) were Courtney and Sev, with a perfect score. The girls took home a total of $50,000, including $20,000 for the room wins, and $30,000 for three 10s. Coming in second with a score of 29 were Lisa and Rosco and in equal third on 21 ½ points were Adam and Jolene and Rick and Tayla with Chantel and Wyatt coming in last place with a score of 17 ½. Chantel and Wyatt won the $10,000 budget award.

Winner: Courtney and Sev, House 4

“This is what Courtney and Sev do super well – they innovate with their creative thinking, they think conceptually, they detail at a designer level, and all those things add up to excellence,” says Judge Darren Palmer.

Courtney and Sev notched up their fifth win of the season with a colourful kids room and a revised living space that celebrates the view.

Best friends Courtney and Sev’s kids bedroom was full of fun and colour, with twin single beds, custom storage (including a study nook) and a wavy bedhead, using CSR Soundstyle. They used a combination of soft and playful elements, with a softly carpeted floor, light timber joinery and teal painted walls (British Paints’ Tiamo).

The judges said it was the first room they’ve seen on The Block this year that has colour and felt it was perfectly executed. They loved the wave bedhead and the attention to detail that the girls displayed.

“This is everything you could possibly do and do super well,” said Darren Palmer. “This is effort plus.”

“It’s not overdone, for the sake of it, even though it’s got this full immersive colour experience,” added Marty Fox.

In the re-done living and dining space, the judges approved of the inclusion of a fireplace and noted the large mirror in the exact same position as House 1, which will capture the views from all angles.

Courtney and Sev also unveiled a gamechanger on Thursday evening, which is a plan for a roof top terrace to take in the city views. The girls have submitted plans to the council in the hope that it will be approved before auction day.

Design tip

Colour drenching is an interior design technique where you paint every surface in a room, including the walls, ceiling, trim, doors, and built-in furniture, in a single colour or closely related tones.

House 1: Adam and Jolene

“An adult child would be ideal for this room,” said Judge Darren Palmer.

SA couple Adam and Jolene decided on a palette of soft pinks and stripes for their kids bedroom, choosing a versatile design to suit a wide variety of ages.

Adam and Jolene had a huge week, winning the Buyers’ Jury open house challenge and securing $50,000, so they were riding high on success, even if they kept their two rooms on the simple side this week.

The couple decided to downplay the drama this week. They rejected the kids bedroom brief, viewing the space more as an additional guest room and decided on a versatile design that would suit guests or adult children. They chose a dusty pink coloured palette for the room, which included striped wallpaper (“it’s nice and soft”, said Jolene), a large artwork and open shelving with a curved wall, bookended by hanging storage. A soft velvet bedhead completed the look.

The judges were disappointed not to see a kids bedroom and felt the room would be stronger for all potential users if Adam and Joelene had included some built-in wardrobes.

Their re-do room was the guest room from Week 1, which had a bit of a stylish refresh and update, to be more in line with their aesthetic as it has developed over the weeks.

Design tip

Stripes on a wall, whether it’s a paint effect or wallpaper, can make a room feel larger and the ceilings higher. However, it is important to make sure that the walls are flat and smooth, or it can highlight defects.

House 2: Chantel and Wyatt

“This layout is much better than House 1,” said Judge Darren Palmer, on entering the bedroom.

Chantel and Wyatt added some colour to their kids bedroom, creating a soft and tranquil retreat.

Gold Coast couple Chantel and Wyatt also decided, on the advice of their real estate agent, to not do a child’s room, instead opting for a bedroom design that was more versatile and could be for older kids or teens, or guests.

There was some unexpected colour in their rooms this week after the couple branched out from their traditional beige palette to introduce some richness into their space, including some plum-coloured bedlinen and a soft wallpaper. Wyatt felt the judges would appreciate the added shades.

Their redo room was their living and dining space, so they reorientated their couch to capture the view and added two more armchairs to make it seem more “lived-in” and expansive, but decided not to flip the room, against the judges’ advice.

The judges called their attitude stubborn, but did appreciate the couple’s choice of furnishings, especially the additional seating and some more interesting artwork. They also enjoyed seeing Chantel and Wyatt include more colour in their decorating.

Design tip

If you don’t want to introduce much colour into a space – and want to keep the base palette timeless, stick to colour in the accessories and décor. Items such as cushions and bedlinen are easy and affordable to update regularly to give a room a fresh look.

House 3: Lisa and Rosco

“The colour palette is perfect; the way they have laid it out, the fantasy, the excitement,” said Judge Shaynna Blaze. “

WA couple Lisa and Rosco took inspiration from their young son to create a beautiful child’s bedroom that oozed fun and style.

On entering Lisa and Rosco’s home, the judges were thrilled to see a kids bedroom.  They loved the thought that went into the wardrobe design and the consistent style, colour and texture palette the couple chose, with Darren Palmer commenting on the detail the couple added.

Inspired by their son Lando, Lisa and Rosco included bunk beds in the room, as well as a showstopping reading nook backed with Australiana wallpaper and lots of storage for toys.

“This is so sweet,” said Shaynna Blaze. “It is not something that is a cliché, it is very Australian.”

“What kid isn’t going to love that?” she added, pointing to the wallpaper featuring kangaroos. “It is so adorable. You can feel the love in the room.”

When the judges moved Into the guest suite redo room, the success continued. The couple restyled the room, expanded the study space, changed the bedhead, artwork, mirror and bedlinen. The judges loved the changes, with Marty Fox saying it was “a lot nicer” and more luxurious.

“I just love the wall treatment they have done, which matches the texture in the ensuite, which in turn makes it a suite,” says Shaynna Blaze.

Design tip

Including upholstered seating in a niche can add a sense of luxury to a room, and be a smart space saver.

House 5: Rick and Tayla

“I actually love that; I think it’s really, really nice,” said Judge Darren Palmer about the pampas grass wallpaper design.

Rick and Tayla’s bedroom design was aimed at tweens, with a soft green palette and wallpaper feature wall.

Father and daughter team Rick and Tayla designed a versatile bedroom aimed at a wide range of ages. The Victorian duo included a wall of cabinetry with a study nook for practicality.

Tayla styled the bedroom with her signature sage green colour palette, adding a point of difference in a large-scale pampas grass wallpaper feature.

The judges all approved of the pampas grass wallpaper and agreed the design helped to create a successful tween room, with judge Darren Palmer saying he thought there was real thought put into the details and construction of the room.

Rick and Tayla’s redo room was the living, dining and alfresco spaces and the judges felt it was a great improvement, especially with regards to the placement and choice of the furniture.

They loved the new colourful artwork and the new sofa colour – a warm (and on-trend) mustard – which worked really well with the change in placement. The new sofa helped to highlight the view and fill the living space in a more thoughtful way.

A green palette is instantly calming and evokes the feeling of nature, as well as being a perennial favourite.
