seachem matrix 1l seachem matrix 1 litre is a premium biological filtration media engineered for high-capacity, long-term biofiltration in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Each litre is made up of highly porous, inert stones (around 10 mm) that provide both external and internal surface area, giving beneficial bacteria far more room to colonise than standard plastic biomedia. The internal macroporous structure is designed to support nitrifying bacteria for ammonia and nitrite control, while also enabling denitrifying activity that can help reduce nitrate within the same filter. matrix won’t break down and doesn’t need routine replacement, making it a cost-effective “set and forget” upgrade for canister filters, sumps, hang-on-back filters, and wet/dry systems. Because a large portion of the bacteria live inside the media, it can be rinsed when required without significantly damaging the biofilter (use removed tank water where possible). key features • high porosity biomedia for efficient removal of nitrogenous waste. • approx. 10 mm pieces; huge surface area per litre (seachem quotes >~700 m²/l). • supports both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria due to internal macropores. • completely inert, won’t break down, and does not need replacing. • suitable for all wet and wet‑dry filtration types, freshwater and marine. directions use 500 ml of matrix per 200 l of aquarium water (so 1 litre treats roughly 400 l at the standard guideline). Place directly in the filter (a media bag is often optional due to the larger granule size).
