Ever tried camping with your dog, only to end up with a lost leash, spilled food and wet, muddy paws in your sleeping bag at 3am?
Yep, camping trips with your pup can be challenging if you don’t have the right gear. And as seasoned campers know, being well-equipped makes a huge difference between an okay time, and a ‘let’s do this again next weekend’ experience.
So along with your tent, camp stove and other creature comforts, you’ll want to put a few dog camping essentials on your packing list, too.
Here are our top picks to make #camplife not just fun for you, but for your pup, too.
No matter how gorgeous the view outside your tent, sleeping on the ground or on a sub-standard camp bed guarantees you’ll be a cranky camper. And the same goes for pets, so set up a cosy spot for your pooch with a water-resistant doggy bed – they’ll hopefully avoid any muddy ground, and you’ll all get a good night’s sleep.
A new location, lots of nature, epic smells and sounds to explore … it’s fair to say campgrounds are paradise to a dog – but an adventurous pup running off at nighttime, getting into mischief or bothering other campers is no fun. That’s why we recommend a waterproof light-up collar (which can be cut to size), so you’ll be able to make sure your pet is easy to spot in the darkness.
If you know a light-up collar wouldn’t work for your pooch and you want to keep them close to camp, consider packing a dog stake and cable – even just for those times when you’re setting up the tent or heading to the shower block and want peace of mind that your dog won’t be running off into the wilderness.
Ask any veteran of the great outdoors about the right gear and they’ll tell you bulky is out and space-saving is in! In fact, the best camping solutions are collapsible ones: cups, buckets, kettles (and the list goes on). So don’t forget to grab a collapsible silicon water or food bowl for your pet – simply push it to a handy flat position when packing up to go home.
Being cold while camping isn’t fun for anyone – so make sure you don’t let your furry friend shiver their way through the night either. A soft puffer pet jacket or reflective vest can make a chilly night out in the elements that much more bearable.
As you can see, choosing just the right dog camping essentials really can make your next trip a lot easier – and with these must-haves, both you and your pup will be well-prepared for a stress-free adventure into the wilderness. Woof!
