How to make a reusable hopscotch path
Overview
Bring back a classic playground favourite with a reusable hopscotch path made from painted pavers. Easy to set up and pack away, it’s a simple way to add colour and active fun to a backyard game without anything too permanent.
Steps
Choose or reuse pavers
New pavers work well for this project, but old or leftover pavers can also work well. Check that they are in good condition with no major cracks. Clean old pavers thoroughly before painting. Scrub with warm water and a stiff brush to remove dirt and dust, and for mould or green staining, use a suitable exterior cleaner and rinse well. Heavily soiled pavers can be pressure washed if needed to pressure wash pavers . Allow them to dry completely before moving on to painting.
Paint the base colours
Once the primer is completely dry, apply exterior paint with a paint roller. Choose bold, playful shades for a retro look or alternate colours for a structured design. Paint two coats and allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.
Paint the numbers
When the base colours are fully dry, lightly pencil the numbers onto each paver. Keep them centred and large enough to be clearly visible when laid out. Then, using a small paint brush, carefully paint each number in a contrasting colour like white or light grey.
Outline the numbers
Once the numbers are dry, use black paint and a fine brush to outline each one. This gives them a bold, graphic finish and helps them stand out against the coloured background. Take your time to keep the outline smooth and even.
Lay out and store
Arrange the pavers in a classic hopscotch pattern on a flat surface such as grass, paving or concrete. When finished playing, stack the pavers and store them in a shed or garage to keep them in good condition and free up space.
