A modern style outdoor lounge retreat on a deck with hanging festoon lights, drinks trolley and potted plants with dog sitting on the rug
Be inspired by boho chic, Hamptons style and modern luxe for a new-look deck. We're sharing simple outdoor styling ideas that will have a big impact.

One space, three ways

With a simple switch of outdoor furniture and styling pieces, we'll show you how easy it is to reimagine your outdoor living space. From a boho retreat to a Hamptons entertainment hub to a modern luxe alfresco lounge room, here are the key elements you’ll need to create each look. We've also included a few out-of-the-box D.I.Y. ideas that’ll amplify your styling.

Boho chic

Create a laid-back vibe with natural rattan furniture, textured accessories and tropical greenery. Introduce natural materials through a selection of cushions and rugs. Clever craft ideas can go a long way when creating a boho retreat: this eye-catching jute cushion is made by stitching two Home Bazar gold pompom jute mats together with some jute twine, and filling it with a cushion insert.

Custom fabric hangings let you tailor the look to suit your space. For these unique pieces, we simply stapled some cheesecloth fabric to a couple of Kit Out D.I.Y. rectangle hanging planters.

Hamptons

Tick-off the Hamptons must-haves: bright whites, navy accents, a touch of nautical and an air of elegance. To bring a cheerful feel to a dining setting, take inspiration from the jaunty stripes on these informal wicker Home Bazar dining chairs.

For your tablescape, create a relaxed feel with mismatched tableware and linens. A curved glass candle holder with rope detailing can help consolidate the elegant nautical look. But remember, never leave lit candles unattended. Use LED versions for extra safety.

Keep cooking clutter at bay while maintaining a flexible deck space with a handy stand on castors for easy manoeuvrability. We modified wall cupboards to create this cool portable storage bench. Check out the October 2021 issue of Bunnings magazine for full step-by-step instructions on the build.

Modern luxe

For a modern outdoor area you’ll want to linger in, introduce the comforts of home: pretty lights, potted greenery, cushions and throws. Soften the hard corners and dark inclusions of an urban space with organic textures and furnishings in warm hues.

Group planters in like colours but differing heights for a cohesive look. Black or dark grey pots are great options when styling up a modern design.

Keep in mind:

  • Bring rugs inside out of the weather when not in use.
  • Keep indoor pots undercover and protected from harsh sun and rain.
  • Check lights used outside are suitable for outdoor use. If they need to be hardwired, ensure installation is by a licensed electrician.
