How to create a wall key holder

Overview

Leaving the house requires not just your phone and wallet, but your house keys. Make sure you don’t forget any of it with this D.I.Y. wall key holder!

Using simple materials and techniques, you’ll be able to create a specific spot to hang your keys and other important items, perfect for a hallway or entryway. 

All you’ll need is a couple of basic D.I.Y. tools and a spare afternoon and soon enough, you’ll never find yourself locked out again.

Steps

1Gather your tools and materials

Below are all of the tools and materials you'll need to complete this project.
Tools for the job, tape measure, pencil, dusk mask, safety glasses, earmuffs, circular saw.

2Measure

Using a tape measure and pencil, measure and mark out 35cm on your fence paling.

3Cut to size

Cut at the mark using a circular saw, making sure to apply a dust mask, safety glasses and earmuffs before turning it on.

4Sand

Sand the timber with a sander to allow the timber finish to go on smoothly. You could also use sandpaper and a sanding block. Wipe away the excess dust.

5Apply finish

Lay down a drop sheet or material to protect your work surfaces. Then, open the timber finish using the can opener and stir using a paint stirrer. Apply the finish to the timber using a paintbrush.

Leave to dry. You could also use paint if you’re after a different look.

6Mark spaces for hooks

Once dry, it’s time to mark where you’d like your hooks. Use a tape measure and pencil to measure out even spaces across the breadth of the timber, marking where you’d like to put your hooks.

7Add key hooks

Screw the hooks in the marked position.

8Add framing hooks

Apply the framing hooks to the back of the holder with the drill. You can now add your own unique touches, writing your name or another label with the grout pen, or go straight to hanging your new key holder on the wall.
