Egg carton holding blue-painted eggshells used as mini pots with small flowering plants, on a table with a yellow cloth, a vase of flowers and a seed packet.

Overview

Create cute living decorations for the breakfast table with this easy child-friendly Easter craft project. You can grow the flowers from seeds or use seedlings if you’re short on time and it’s a great way to get the kids to eat their eggs so they can save the shells for creative fun.

Tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Easter craft ideas for kids: Mini egg pots

Turn breakfast eggshells into a child-friendly flower show.

Steps

1Paint the eggshells

Rinse the saved eggshells and leave to dry. Use a paintbrush to apply 1-2 coats of craft paint in blue to the eggshells; leave to dry after each coat.

2Plant the eggshells

Cut the lid off egg carton using scissors, then cut in half (reserve other half). Position eggshells in carton holes, fill with seed-raising mix and plant seeds; water in using a spray bottle.

3Display the mini egg pots

When shoots appear, transfer the egg pots to the reserved half carton for display.

Tip: You can plant small seedlings in the eggshells for faster results.

4Keep in mind...

  • Supervise children at all times when using scissors.
  • Keep gardening, craft and food utensils separate.
  • Take care when selecting your plants, as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and wear gloves and a mask when handling potting mix.
  • Paint colours may vary on application.
