When it comes to the best gifts, personal and homemade trumps store-bought, hands down. And D.I.Y. Mother’s Day gifts send a message to Mum or that special female in your life that you cared enough to take the time. Whether you’re a grown-up with a licence to drill, or looking for an easy, last-minute craft project that the kids can handle, there are loads of creative options to choose from. You might like to use a craft kit to make a custom candle with her favourite scent, or perhaps they’d love a mosaic art coaster for their morning tea. Or, for something cute and fun, why not enlist the kids to make a simple candle holder or pinch pot from air dry clay, or get them making Taylor Swift-inspired friendship bracelets? A terracotta pot painted in her favourite colour or pattern, with the addition of a gorgeous indoor plant, is another classic handmade gift.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment when undertaking a D.I.Y. project (safety glasses, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.
Nothing says ‘Mother’s Day’ like breakfast in bed, and whether you’re serving up eggs benedict made from scratch or burnt toast with a side of buttery toddler handprints, an elegant bed tray is sure to elevate the gesture. This homemade bed tray is better than a bought one, but super quick and simple to put together with just a pine panel and four short furniture legs.
We’ve used white chalk paint and hairpin legs here, but the tray could be made even more custom with different furniture legs, or painted in any colour you like, to suit Mum’s style.
If Mum is a baking whizz, the host(ess) with the most or a legend with a lunchbox, she’s probably amassed enough cookbooks to last her a while. This year, up your gifting game with a D.I.Y. cookbook holder. This handy craft project is as good as an extra set of hands in the kitchen, propping up a cookbook where Mum can see it, holding her page and helping maximise benchtop space (while avoiding pesky food splashes). It’s a multipurpose gift too – Mum can use it as a pedestal for her favourite plant, a vase of flowers or even the kids’ macaroni picture frame. You can also get crafty and creative with this one – paint or stain the timber to match Mum’s home decor – or customise the sizing to suit a specific spot.
A D.I.Y. serving board, homemade with love, is a beautiful gift in itself, but an engraved serving board gives you the opportunity to create something truly personal, which Mum will treasure forever. Engrave a Mother’s Day message, your family’s names or an abstract pattern – your level of skill is not as important as the lovely sentiment behind it.
This project uses a soldering iron to engrave the timber, so it’s definitely not one for children. But you can involve the kids in another way: why not get them to write a message on paper or draw a ‘mummy and me’ picture first, which you can then transfer to the timber and immortalise with the soldering iron?
This project is an easy (and relatively cheap) gift for every mum – by designing a customised potted herb garden, you can serve up a mix of fragrant herbs to suit your mum’s personality. If she’s a tea drinker with a love for herbals, pot up a mix of peppermint, lemon balm and chamomile. If mocktails are more her speed, try rosemary or mint. And for the healthy smoothie-drinking mum, pot up leafy greens and antioxidant-loaded basil.
