Halloween trick or treat station with ping pong eyeball plants either side

Trick-or-treat surprise!

Give trick-or-treaters thrills and chills when they come on their quest for candy and creepiness with a frightening D.I.Y. Halloween treat station. Follow this step-by-step guide to make gruesome pot plants that keep an eye on the lolly bags hanging between the stakes! Painting the eyeballs and lolly bags is a fun Halloween craft for the kids but the rest of the project is a D.I.Y. job for the adults.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, ear muffs, gloves and mask ) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Prepare the stakes

On one face of each hardwood stake, mark a centrepoint 100mm down from the tip, then at 300mm and 500mm. Hammer in a 30mm x 2mm galvanised flat head nail at each mark.

A hand holds a nail as it is hammered into a black hardwood garden stake

2Secure the stakes

Secure stakes through the base of the barrel planters using a drill and two 30mm timber screws. Stand barrels upright. Cut three 1m lengths of jute twine and tie to the nails.

3Paint the eyeballs

Using artist’s acrylics and round craft dabbing sponges, apply a black circle to ping-pong balls and leave to dry, then apply a slightly smaller blue circle on top; let dry. Use small artist’s brushes to paint a black pupil on eyes, then a white dot highlight and red veins; let dry.

Red veins are painted onto a ping-pong eyeball with a small artist’s brush

4Attach the eyeballs

Remove flower buds from faux magnolia greenery, then attach eyeballs in their place using hot glue. Stick eyeball plants into foam bricks placed in the barrel planters. Arrange coconut fibre to cover the foam.

5Stamp the lolly bags

Sketch a pumpkin face and a flying bat onto white card, cut out with a craft knife, then attach toothpicks with hot glue. Squeeze orange and black artist’s acrylics onto paint trays, dip the stamps and press onto the front side of white paper lolly bags; let dry. Use wooden pegs to hang lolly bags from twine strung between barrel planter stakes*.

Tip: Keep in mind to ensure stakes are placed out of thoroughfares and round off any sharp points with sandpaper.
