Overview

This craft activity for kids will give their favourite pens and pencils a brighter place to live.

What are fine motor skills?

Fine motor skills are:

  • Coordinated use of small muscles, particularly in hands, fingers and wrists – which is why craft activities for kids are a great way to get those muscles working.
  • Essential for everyday tasks like writing, using utensils, cutting or screwing the lid on a jar.
  • Using the small muscles of the body to grasp, pinch, hold or manipulate small objects, which build on larger gross motor movements.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Paint the craft caddy

  • Working on a drop sheet, use a paintbrush to apply two coats of yellow artist’s acrylic paint to all surfaces of the caddy, inside and out.
  • Leave to dry after each coat.

2Choose your stencil and paint the design

  • Position a stencil on the front of the caddy, and apply blue paint with a stencil brush (don’t overload it with paint).
  • Gently lift the stencil, taking care not to smudge the paint.
  • Leave to dry and repeat on all sides.
  • Finish with a clear spray sealer, if desired.
