We all spend a lot of time in the kitchen. These three handmade gifts are things that can be used every day, making them the perfect present.
A cookbook holder is an item you never knew you needed until you have one! They make a world of difference making cooking easier and more efficient.
We’re sharing this easy and straightforward D.I.Y. guide to creating an elegant timber cookbook holder, both practical and beautiful. It can hold (or display) a cookbook or a tablet, making it a multifaceted tool for any kitchen.
An engraved serving board is another easy and useful D.I.Y. project. It’s a great personalised gift that you can engrave with names, personalised messages and even drawings suited to the person you’re giving it to.
If you want to knock the socks off someone, these two homemade gifts are sure to impress. Both look store-bought and spectacular, but these D.I.Y. projects can be created with our step-by-step guides.
Blend artistry and functionality with this stunning D.I.Y. mosaic coffee table. You can change the tile and grout colour to suit your giftee’s style, making it a truly personalised and thoughtful gift they can cherish for years.
Take a useful tray and give it a special treatment with some D.I.Y. tiling and painting. This project is easier than you might think – we’ve kept things simple by using a crazy-pave style of mosaics that eliminates the need to cut tiles to fit.
Do you know someone who loves to host? These handy D.I.Y. gifts will level up any backyard barbecue or gathering.
This D.I.Y. project is perfect for carrying condiments, napkins and more at family picnics and backyard barbecues. It’s simple to make, transforming a wooden crate with off-the-shelf paint, stencils and webbing. Even better, it might earn you an invite to the next barbecue.
If a regular serving tray is too boring, try this D.I.Y. drinks paddle - a stylish addition to any home bar. With just a bit of timber, some power tools, timber stain and some nifty know-how, you’ll be able to create this personalised gift for a special someone.
Tip: The size pictured carries four cups, but you can tailor it to suit.
Green things make wonderful gifts, and we have a couple of good ones to share.
Herb gardens are a delight – they look beautiful and taste and smell even better. Take this D.I.Y. gift idea one step further by cultivating a themed herb garden to gift to someone special. For example, if you know someone who loves tea, design a ‘tea pot’, full of herbs like mint, lemon balm, peppermint and chamomile – all of which are lovely when infused with hot water, creating a refreshing, restorative brew.
Do you know a mocktail enthusiast? Create a pot of herbs commonly used in popular drinks, like rosemary and sage.
How about someone who loves smoothies? Make a pot of healthy greens, like sweet basil, spinach and kale, all of which are ideal for morning pick-me-ups.
Terrariums brighten any indoor space. These lovely D.I.Y. projects are easy to make and easy to care for, and they’re perfect presents for people who don’t have a lot of space and/or prefer low-maintenance greenery.
All you need is a glass bowl or jar with a large opening (which allows the gardener easy access to their plants), a few easy layers of products, topped off with a collection of plants that work well in small spaces. (For example, peperomias, air plants, mondo grass, small begonias, ferns, moss, “Moon Valley” pilea (Pilea involucrata), sedums, cacti and succulents. If in doubt, look for small plants that thrive in humid environments.)
Tip: To make any garden gift even more special, pair it with a Bunnings Gift Card so the recipient can browse products to keep their plants healthy and thriving, or so they can add to their collection.
We have plenty of inspiration! Take a look at some of these creative D.I.Y. projects.
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
