Drinks paddle on a modern kitchen bench

Overview

A drinks paddle is a stylish addition to any home bar, and it also makes a great gift. If you’re looking for a creative and functional D.I.Y. project, check out this step-by-step guide to make your own.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glassesglovesear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Mark out the handle

Place your hardwood material on a work surface and use a pencil to trace the outline of your desired handle design on one end. Make it as intricate or straightforward as you like – have fun with it!

2Cut out the handle using a jigsaw

Use a jigsaw to carefully cut along the marked lines, shaping the handle as desired. After cutting, use an orbital sander to achieve a smooth finish on the edges. Use a trim router to tidy up and refine the edges for a polished look.

3Mark out holes for cups

To determine the ideal length of the drinks paddle, arrange the desired number of cups along it. For this project, we've used four cups, spaced approximately 110mm apart.

Mark the spacing between the cups, and then mark the centre line – this is where you’ll drill the holes.

4Cut holes for the cups

Measure the base of the cups to determine the appropriate hole size. Choose a hole saw that’s slightly larger than the cup base to create a snug fit. Test the hole size on a scrap piece of wood before drilling into the drinks paddle to make sure it’s a good fit, then drill the cup holes.

Tip: For a neater result, use a router to tidy up the holes on the top and bottom of the paddle.

5Cut the length of the drinks paddle

For a comfortable hold, add an additional 100mm beyond the end cup for gripping. (This will come in handy if you need to carry it with both hands.) Use a circular saw to cut the paddle to the desired length, then round off all edges and corners using a trim router. This will give your drinks paddle a refined finish.

6Sand the drinks paddle with an orbital sander

When you're satisfied with the shape of the paddle, use an orbital sander with 100-120 grit sandpaper for a final sanding. This will help smooth out any imperfections and give it a sleek and polished finish.

7Stain the drinks paddle

Lastly, choose a stain or paint and apply it to your paddle, allowing it to dry before adding a second coat. Leave to dry completely.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
