pegboard for tool storage

Overview

Maximise space for tool storage with this useful D.I.Y. pegboard.

Steps

1Fun and functional

This D.I.Y. pegboard organises your tools and gets rid of unnecessary clutter – with style. We turned an average tool-tidying space in a garage into something fun and functional, by creating this striking chevron-like design on black metal pegboards. Here’s how we did it.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

2Clean the pegboards and position the tape

First, choose your design and clean the surface of the pegboards with sugar soap wipes. In a well-ventilated area, spread a drop sheet over the work surface and surrounding area. Place the pegboards face up and position the painter’s tape, pressing along edges of each strip with your fingertips.

3Apply spray paint

Apply spray paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Cover sections for different colours (or negative space) with scrap paper and tape to protect them from overspray. Wait for the first colour to dry and then cover the first colour before spraying the next.

4Remove the tape for final design

Once all of the spray-painted panels are dry, carefully remove the tape by pulling back and up at a low, 90° angle to reveal your design.

Tip: If paint starts to flake, lightly run the point of a craft scalpel blade along the edge of the tape before continuing to peel off.

5Keep in mind…

  • When spray-painting, always wear safety equipment (eye protection, gloves and a mask) and ensure the work area is well-ventilated.
  • If drilling into walls to install a finished pegboard, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework and turn off the power before working. Use fixings appropriate for your wall type. If unsure, call a professional.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
