How to build a space-saving laundry bench

Start by switching off and unplugging your washing machine and dryer. Remove any laundry baskets, detergent bottles or other items from the area. Carefully move the appliances away from the wall so you have enough room to work safely. Because washing machines and dryers can be heavy, get help if needed when moving them.

While they're out, give the area a quick clean to remove any dust or lint that's collected behind the machines. It's also a good opportunity to inspect hoses, power cords and connections before everything is moved back into place.

Measure the combined width of your washing machine and dryer, along with the depth of the appliances, to determine the size of your benchtop.

Leave enough clearance around the appliances so the benchtop won't rub against them during use, and make sure there's adequate space at the back for hoses, power cords and ventilation.

Measure the height of both appliances as well. Your support panels should position the benchtop slightly above the appliances so the finished bench remains fully freestanding and doesn't transfer weight onto either machine.

Choose a benchtop material that suits the look you're after and complements your laundry design. A solid timber panel creates a warm, natural finish, while a thick MDF panel provides a smooth surface that's ideal for painting.

Cut the benchtop and two support panels to size. If you're using a circular saw, follow the manufacturer's instructions and wear appropriate safety gear.

If you don't have the tools to cut the panels yourself, check at your local Bunnings. Many stores offer a cutting service for timber panels purchased in-store.

Before assembling, dry-fit the pieces to make sure everything sits square, level and at the correct height.

Position the support panels upright at each end and secure them to the underside of the benchtop using solid metal brackets and timber screws.

Because the support panels carry the weight of the benchtop, there's no need to fix the unit to the wall. This makes it a practical solution for renters or anyone who wants a movable laundry workstation.

Before fully tightening the fixings, check that the frame is square and that both support panels sit flat on the floor.

Once the table has been assembled, apply a suitable timber sealer or paint to protect the surface from moisture, spills and everyday wear. Allow the finish to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before installation.

Carefully slide the finished table into position over your washing machine and dryer.

Check that:

• both support panels sit firmly on the floor

• the benchtop doesn't rest on either appliance

• appliance doors, controls and detergent drawers remain fully accessible

• hoses and power cords aren't pinched or compressed

If your washing machine and dryer are slightly different heights, an anti-vibration mat can be placed under the lower appliance to help reduce movement and improve alignment beneath the benchtop.

With your new benchtop in place, you can turn your attention to making the space both practical and inviting.

Keep everyday essentials such as laundry detergent, stain remover and pegs organised in containers or on a tray. A small indoor plant or decorative item can add personality, while leaving plenty of clear bench space makes folding and sorting laundry easier.
