garage door

Overview

The weather seal along the bottom of your garage door is one hardworking piece of rubber. It prevents dust and rain from blowing in and insects and other pests from crawling under. These seals do eventually deteriorate. However, a weather seal can be easily replaced by anyone with basic D.I.Y. skills.

Before buying a replacement garage door weather seal, note the brand of your door, its width and how the seal folds into the track. Also, check you have the right drill bit for the screws that attach the side door guides to the wall. If you have any questions, come in-store and speak with one of our helpful Team Members.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses and gloves, for example) and follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Remove the screws and cartridge on the track

Open the garage door fully and, on the side with the most space, use a drill with an appropriately sized bit to remove the screws holding the guide on the wall. (We needed an 8mm nut driver for these screws.) Move the guide away. Use a screwdriver to remove the plastic cartridge or stopper on the metal track that holds the seal.
Tip: Change an automated door to manual via the switch or lever on the side before opening it by hand to remove the seal.

2Slide off the old weather seal

Wearing gloves, slide the old weather seal along the metal track to remove it completely. Run a scraper into the track recesses and along the base to remove all debris, then clean with a barbecue wipe.

3Slide the new seal into the track

Lubricate the track by using the attached straw to spray silicone into the recesses. Feed the new weather seal into the two track recesses.
Tip: Enlist another pair of hands to feed in the seal while you pull it along to help prevent it from slipping out and to avoid stretching the rubber.

4Pull the seal through and trim

Pull the new weather seal through and trim it, leaving a short overhang on the ends to allow for shrinkage. Replace the cartridge or stopper. Push the door to fully open and reposition the guide on the door, reinstalling the screws into the existing wall holes.
Tip: Use a sharp knife to trim the seal to avoid agitating it out of the track.

5Keep in mind…

  • Garage doors attract insects, so protect yourself by wearing gloves and closed footwear.

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
