Renovating a bathroom can be tricky, but the smaller scale of a powder room makes it a much easier job to D.I.Y. This small bathroom space is also a great place to experiment with bold decor choices, such as daring paint colours and fabulous wallpaper designs - here, we’ve used an adventurous wallpaper as the starting point, taking it from walls to ceiling (and inside drawers!) and using a coordinating paint colour on wall panelling and the vanity, too.
VJ-look wall linings are a great way to introduce character to any interior, and are so much simpler to install than traditional tongue-and-groove planks. Choose a moisture-resistant product for a wet area like our powder room, and install it up to dado-rail height for a heritage look. We used easycraft ‘EasyRegency’ wet area wall lining - browse the easycraft range and check out the installation guides to find the best fit for your space.
Finish with paint formulated for wet areas, in a gloss finish for wipeable easy cleaning.
Tip: If pairing with wallpaper, reference a shade from the wallpaper design for a cohesive look.
Flamboyant prints are trending, with patterned wallpaper adorning ceilings as well as walls. To do this yourself, enlist a second pair of hands, get a suitable ladder, use Superfresco Easy paste-the-wall paper, and work on the ceiling before the walls. Best of all, if you tire of the look, this product peels off cleanly in a jiffy – no steaming required! Bonus idea: Use leftover wallpaper as a pretty drawer liner.
To make a compact powder room look bigger, match the colour of the vanity unit to the wall panelling so it appears to recede. Use a specialty paint system such as the Dulux Renovation Range for cabinet doors, tinted to your chosen hue – we used Dulux Lady Fern, a soothing green that complements the foliage in the fabulous wallpaper. For tips on customising cabinets, check out this how-to guide.

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
