There are many important design considerations when planning an assisted living bathroom, to ensure you properly cater for people with mobility issues and allow them to care for themselves in their own home. Caroma’s senior manager in product visualisation, Dr Peter Sweatman, shares his top three tips for creating an assisted living bathroom using the new HomeCare by Caroma range of products, available exclusively at Bunnings.
Reducing the risk of falls is a key focus of smarter, more supportive bathroom design, says Dr Peter. And grab rails are a practical addition to any bathroom designed for assisted living. “The Caroma HomeCare Grab Rail 600 STR in Matte Black or Caroma HomeCare Grab Rail 900 STR in Brushed Nickel have dual fixing points and are tested to take a minimum 110kg when fixed into a structural element,” he says.
Find out how to make your home smarter for independent living in this simple guide to smart home features from Bunnings.
Making the space more comfortable and enjoyable is also important. “It’s about using design to make bathroom tasks easier and more convenient for people,” Dr Peter explains. “Try fixtures and fittings that appeal visually and work with your overall design, such as a Caroma HomeCare Care Rail Shower or Caroma HomeCare Basin Mixer.”
When choosing tapware and fixtures, look for smooth, simple surfaces. “The sleek design of the Caroma HomeCare Shower Mixer is easy to wipe down, so it’s less likely to harbour dirt and harmful germs,” he says.
