/New leaves are unfurling and the scent of blossom is in the air, your cue to make the most of the warm days ahead. Seek out new plants to brighten up garden beds and containers, reimagine your alfresco living spaces, and try your hand at D.I.Y. projects. Create a multi-functional nature post to entice creatures great and small, or a space-saving pot display for a portable piece that can move with you.
Craft a multi-function focal point for your backyard or balcony that feeds birds, provides light at night and lets you grow your favourite plants!
Using a 1.8m treated pine post, wrap rot-resistant rope around the centre, securing with high-strength exterior adhesive and galvanised nails at the ends. Enlist a second pair of hands to position the post in the centre of a large garden pot and add quick-set concrete halfway up the pot to hold the post in place – make sure you follow the manufacturer’s safety advice and instructions. Spray-paint a lantern topper with 2-in-1 paint and primer. Once the concrete is set, fit the painted lantern to the top of the post with adhesive and insert a puck light suitable for outdoor use, then fix brackets in staggered positions using galvanised screws. Add plants to the base and hang your accessories.
Maximise your growing space with a tiered pot stand. Place in a sunny spot and fill with a mix of containers and plants for an informal, eclectic look. As the plants grow, space them out – the beauty of pots is that you can move them!
Note: For D.I.Y. projects that are intended to live outside, be sure to use durable materials that can withstand the elements, such as treated pine, waterproof adhesive and galvanised fixings. Then enjoy the fruits of your labour for years to come.

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
