/Growing fresh, healthy produce and flowers organically is often thought to be a confusing and labour-intensive process. Horticulturist Melissa King of Scotts tells us how growing in a more sustainable way is made easier when you revitalise the health of depleted soil, and feed your plants naturally using the new range of organic gardening products from Scotts.
Perhaps one of the most important areas to go organic in our lives is in the garden, especially when you’re growing healthy produce at home to feed yourself and your family. This is certainly Melissa’s long-held belief. “As a mother of two growing boys, there’s never been a time in my life when I’ve thought more about what my family is eating and the importance of growing food that’s good for our health,” she says.
Scotts’ new range of organic plant foods simplifies this once complicated process, taking away much of the effort of growing naturally. The one-step fertiliser is certified for use in organic gardening, and has been scientifically proven* to improve soil and plant health. “One of the many benefits of gardening is knowing exactly how your food or flowers have been grown,” says Melissa. “For me, organic gardening isn’t just a style that’s in tune with nature, it’s a mindset; a feeling that I’m doing the right thing by my family and for the environment.”
Creating a gorgeous garden filled with an abundance of naturally grown flowers and healthy produce all starts with improving your plants’ foundation. “The power of organic gardening lies in building good soil health, through the addition of organic matter,” explains Melissa. Scotts Organic Plant Food Concentrate is an easy, economical option, while Scotts Organic Plant Food Ready to Use alternative is even more convenient. “It not only increases fertility in the soil, it improves structure and the soil’s ability to hold onto water and nutrients while encouraging microbes, which are essential to healthy soil,” says Melissa. “When soil health is at its best, plants are more robust and able to resist attack by pests and diseases – and the result is happier, healthier plants,” she adds. “Building soil health and feeding organically is a long-term and very beneficial investment in your garden. The longer you nurture and care for the soil with organic matter and organic plant foods, the better it gets.”
When using Scotts’ new range of eco-friendly organic solutions to support soil nutrition and plant health in your garden, you’re also taking a small step towards creating a greener future. The packaging for this new range of certified organic garden care products includes a refillable bottle for the Organic Plant Food Hose On option, as well as Organic Plant Food Hose On Refill, which uses 65 per cent less plastic than a new refillable bottle.
“If you’re new to organic gardening, one of the easiest ways to start is to create a potted garden,” says Melissa. “Begin by filling decorative containers with Scotts Organic Potting Mix for All Plants. It’s certified for organic gardens and packed with lots of natural goodness, like blood and bone, seaweed and chicken manure.”
“Plant your container garden with compact-growing vegetables like tumbling tomatoes, lettuces or silverbeet, or bring nature into your backyard with pollinator plants like lavender, echinacea or salvias.”
