Pots of love

There’s something magic about finding the perfect plant, picking the right pot and bringing it home to meet the rest of your plant family. It could be the idea of beautiful blooms or tasty fruit, or the transformation that comes from potting up a gorgeous group of plants to green up your living spaces. It doesn’t matter whether you have an experienced green thumb or you’ve just started your growing journey – when you use the right ingredients and add a little extra love, you’ll bring out the best in all you grow.

Start with the best

Just as we need a strong foundation for a solid home, our plants need the right potting mix to maintain happy and healthy growth. Different plants have different growing needs – from acid-loving roses to phosphorus-sensitive Australian native plants, like kangaroo paw – so be sure to choose a potting mix that’s right for your plants.

Scotts Osmocote has a range of specialty potting mixes tailor-made for all of your favourite plants. With more than 50 years of horticultural expertise inside every bag, each unique mix contains added goodies like wetting agents, growth stimulants, sustainably sourced materials and specific nutrients to bring out the best in your plants.

Planting perfectly

Once you’ve found the ideal plant, it’s time to bring it all together.

Step 1: Choose the right pot

Pick a pot that has good drainage and is slightly larger than the grower’s pot your plant is in. If the pot is too big, there’s a risk of excess potting mix remaining damp and leading to root rot. You can also combine different plants in the same pot to create stunning displays – just be sure they all like the same growing conditions.

Step 2: Rehome your plant

To get started, put your hand over the top of the grower’s pot with your fingers spread around the base of the plant, then tip the pot upside down. Gently tap the base of the pot and the plant should come out. Once out, loosen the plant’s root ball and brush away any old potting mix; be careful not to overly disturb the roots. Remove any damaged, dried or twisted roots, as this will help the plant settle and grow better in its new pot. If you are trimming the roots, it’s important to wipe the blade with rubbing alcohol between each cut to avoid spreading any diseases or unwanted bacteria.

Step 3: Add potting mix

Fill your chosen pot part-way with the right potting mix. Scotts Osmocote PremiumPlus Superior Potting Mix is the perfect choice for any potted plant. It contains a wetting agent and water-storing crystals, coir peat (which aids in moisture and nutrient retention), trace elements and growth stimulants. Position your plant so that it’s planted at the same height as it was in the grower’s pot, and then gently pack the potting mix around your plant.

Step 4: Provide some TLC

Welcome your plant to its new home by giving it a loving dose of Scotts Osmocote Pour+Feed Ready To Use Liquid Fertiliser. (While you’re at it, don’t forget to spoil your other plants with Scotts Osmocote Controlled Release Fertiliser.) Give your new plant a good watering and keep it out of direct sunlight and harsh wind for the first seven days.

The big secret

What’s the secret to happy, healthy plants? Food! At a basic level, plants need nitrogen for leafy growth, phosphorus for root development and potassium for an abundance of flowers and fruit, plus a range of trace elements. Scotts Osmocote Controlled Release Fertilisers take the guesswork out of feeding and are specifically designed to suit any plant in your garden. The controlled release technology feeds your plants only when they are actively growing and need it most. It’s easy to use - simply sprinkle the Osmocote prills around the base of your plant to bring out the best they can offer, all season long.

Weekend care

Spoiling your plants with that extra ‘boost’ of nutrients is a rewarding weekend task. Scotts Osmocote Pour+Feed All Purpose Liquid Fertiliser is ready-to-use liquid plant food. It is enriched with seaweed to improve overall plant health and boosted with iron and magnesium to produce lush, deep-green leaves. To top it all off, it’s fast-acting, with visible results in just seven days; it is also low in phosphorus, making it perfect for native plants. Simply pour a capful onto moist soil around your plants. It’s that easy - no mixing, no mess and no fuss.

Some products are not available at all stores, but may be ordered.
