/Plant up your garden beds, pots and planters with brilliantly flowering perennials. These can be works of art, both outside and in. Try potting up petunias in hanging baskets to bring a burst of colour up high or cut dahlias on long stems for a stunning show indoors.
This adaptable annual or perennial is easy to grow and comes in a wide variety of forms and colours, producing long-lasting flower spikes that are a magnet for birds, bees and beneficial insects. Suitable for most soil types, salvias like a well-draining spot in full sun and are tolerant of hot, dry conditions once established. Salvias are ideal for dry areas and low-maintenance gardens. Prune back after flowering to encourage a bushy habit.
Renowned for their spectacular flowers that range from delicate pompoms to dinner plate-sized blooms in just about every colour of the rainbow, dahlias certainly have the ‘wow’ factor. For best results, grow them in a well-draining, sunny spot and stake taller varieties at planting time. Once they reach 20cm tall, pinch out the tops to encourage side shoots.
With their neat mounding or cascading habit, petunias are a lovely way to add colour and cheer to the garden, pots or hanging baskets. This prolific bloomer has flowers up to 4cm wide. The flowers have single, double or ruffled petals and come in many different sizes and shades, including multi-coloured forms. Position in full sun, and deadhead and feed regularly.
Also known as zonal pelargoniums, these are well-loved for their pink, red, orange or white flowers, which can be single or double, and one or two colours on the same flower. They grow well across climates from cool to subtropical, and are drought-hardy once established. Geraniums are fabulous in a pot, hanging basket or window box. Place in full sun to part-shade, in well-drained soil, and liquid feed regularly with a high-potassium fertiliser.
