Your checklist for reducing waste

  • Use this quick and easy checklist to help reduce your waste at home.
  • Make sure that you have a separate recycling bin in your kitchen so that you put your rubbish in the right bins at home. This can be as simple as a cardboard box.
  • When putting your recyclables in the council recycling bin make sure it’s not enclosed in a plastic bag.
  • Store food in reusable containers in the fridge and pantry rather than wrapping them in food wrap. This will reduce your household waste and keep your food fresher for longer.
  • Take a reusable bag with you when you go shopping. If you do need to use plastic shopping bags make sure you recycle them on your next visit.
  • Instead of sending food scraps to landfill, where appropriate save them for your pets or your neighbour’s pets.
  • Set up your own kitchen garden with herb pots on your window sill or your own vegetable garden to help reduce your food packaging waste.
  • Set up a compost bin or worm farm to reduce the amount of waste you send to landfill and to create fertiliser for your garden.
  • Instead of throwing your clothes away donate them to a local charity.
  • Get crafty by repairing or refurbishing old items before throwing them away.
