I am instantly struck by the depth of colour,” said Shaynna Blaze. “They’ve really gone heavy in detail and energy in here.
Emma and Ben created a couple of thoughtful, yet fun spaces with their kids room designs. In the first room, the Victorian couple created a whimsical and pretty bedroom designed for girls with garden fairy vibes, and a pink and peach colour scheme.
A wallpaper feature wall behind the beds won praise and created a strong impression on the judges. “This feels great; it’s a lot softer,” said Marty Fox, who liked the option of the twin beds in this space. “I really like this room. It’s very marketable and has something special.”
The second space of House 1 was aimed at teenage boys with more of a musician/skater feel and a darker, moody palette created with wallpaper.
The point of difference? A showstopping circular niche on the feature wall, created with plaster and used as both a bookcase and bench seat. The timber bench and floating shelves in the niche won praise from Darren Palmer who said they complemented the wooden bed beautifully.
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
